How To Dress Like Marcia Clarke This Halloween

by Jordana Lipsitz

All Hallows Eve is upon, but if you're like me, you have a zillion other things to do. Getting together the perfect costume is going to be a toughie between work and yoga classes and binge-watching The Get Down. May I suggest a Marcia Clarke costume for Halloween this year? Marcia Clarke was the modestly dressed real-life head of the prosecution in the O.J. Simpson trial for the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman. Her swag would be an easy way to do Halloween right — all you really need is some on-point pop culture references and dedication to make it a great costume.

In the recent true crime series following the events of the trial, The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, Clarke was played by Sarah Paulson. In the series, we learn a little bit about how Clarke was victimized by the media while also catching a glimpse of the lawyer's professional, simple, and shoulder-pad heavy style. It is a style that was born too be turned into a Halloween costume. Finding business attire that a '90s lawyer would rock will probably only require limited shopping — though there are also ways to go glam with this costume choice.

Here's the breaks.

1. The Perm

Get yourself a permed wig. It's totally '90s and totally Clarke. You can snag a wig online for under $30. You can go for long-haired Clarke or short, based on if you want to seem fierce or appeal more as feminine to your "jurors". Just art up any wig with that '90s frump people were so into.

2. The Blazer

To get the perfect '90s blazer, I would highly suggest simply heading to your local Goodwill, or a classier vintage store if you're feeling frisky. The best way to go retro is to actually get something retro. But if all you have time for in your life is to do a frenzied internet search, or want to get a blazer you can really hold onto, there's no better place to go than Etsy. I would suggest red for some power color vibes.

3. The Turtleneck

Karen Scott Mock-Turtleneck Top, $11, Macy's

For some reasons, wearing tee shirts and turtlenecks under blazers was super popular from the '80s to the '90s. Don't look at me, I don't make the rules, I just write them. Be sure to include a turtleneck under your blazer to intensify the lawyer-ness. I found a white one on Macy's website for only $10, which is pretty OK for a Halloween costume you will probably only wear once.

4. A Knee-Length Pencil Skirt

Pencil Skirt, $13, H&M

A pencil skirt is just a great accessory to have in your life. You could go pants, but hey, it's Halloween, go a little glam. If a pencil skirt is something you're trying to wear constantly in your life (which you should because you will always feel like a sexy business lady) I'd suggest going a little fancier. But for our purposes, check out H&M's selection for the deals.

5. Sheer Black Pantyhose

You can never go wrong with sheer pantyhose. Until it inevitably gets a run in it two minutes after you put it on. Get yourself a three-pack because you're worth it.

6. The Accessories

Hammered Drop Brass Gold Earrings, $13, Etsy

I'd suggest some classic, gold earrings. Keep it classy. You don't want to get too flashy with that jury watching your every move.

Marcia Clarke is an easy costume you can totally nail without too much a hassle. Get creative with it! Good luck costume hunters.
