It's that time of year: Pumpkin spice everything. And now, McDonald's Japan is serving pumpkin-spiced fries, in case you just can't get enough of the popular seasonal flavor. Many of us are already enjoying Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and baking enthusiasts are busy creating pumpkin-ized breads, muffins, and cakes; as such, I suppose it's to be expected that one of the biggest fast food chains is jumping on the bandwagon in a rather, er, creative way. Right? Right.
I know what you're thinking: Why, why, why would you ever mess with the best fast food French fry in the world? Honestly, I don't know, but Japan was apparently in the mood to shake things up. So, from Sept. 28 to Halloween, they'll be offering their traditional shoestring fries drizzled in chocolate and pumpkin sauces. What are those sauces made of? Again, I'm not really sure, I'm choosing to imagine little old grandparents churning melted Swiss and dark chocolate and mashing freshly baked pumpkins from the farm down the road, telling stories and singing happily. Don't burst my bubble.
The location announced the exciting and slightly concerning news on their Twitter page. Here's a picture of the fries, in case you were wanting to indulge in this creative autumn snack — or just stare in fascination:
Maybe I'm being narrow-minded. After all, the sweet-and-salty combination may very well be delicious. I once tried chocolate-covered potato chips, which sounded disgusting but ended up being heavenly. And don't some people like to dip their fries in chocolate shakes? Maybe these chocolate- and pumpkin-flavored fires will be a hit just like that. Maybe. Probably not. But possibly.
I get the pumpkin spice obsession. Really. I put it in my oatmeal. I sprinkle it in pancake batter. Sometimes, when I'm having a rough day, I like to throw it in the air and dance in it. But this... I draw the line here. If you're in the mood for pumpkin spice and want to play it a little safer, McDonald's of course offers their own Pumpkin Spice Latte, which I'm sure will tickle your tastebuds and warm your cockles in this chilly fall weather.
Either way, +10 bonus points to McDonald's Japan for creativity. The Halloween nut inside of me is clapping joyously.
