Is Lady Gaga Playing The Super Bowl?
If you count yourself among the legions of fans referring to themselves as Little Monsters, today is the day all your Christmas wishes all come at once. According to Sports Business Daily's Terry Lefton, Lady Gaga is reportedly headlining the 2017 Super Bowl halftime show. This rumor, which is also being reported on CBS Sports, had already been predicted by Billboard all the way back on Sept. 13 (according to Billboard’s unnamed sources, the reason why the NFL was so interested in Lady Gaga as a choice was thanks to the high caliber of “her performance of the National Anthem at the 2016 Super Bowl") — but now it's being reported as confirmed. According to his post, Lefton predicts that Fox will make the official announcement on Sunday during its pre-game show.
If it does indeed happen, though, it may not be that Gaga was the first choice for the job. Pop superstar Adele confided in fans during her performance at the Los Angeles Staples Center that "First of all, I'm not doing the Super Bowl. I mean, come on, that show is not about music. And I don't really — I can't dance or anything like that. They were very kind, they did ask me, but I said no." Despite Adele's comments, the NFL denies ever offering her the role.
As of yet, there’s no confirmation as to whether other performers will be involved in the show à la the Coldplay/Beyoncé performance. More intriguingly, there are also still rumors going 'round that Gaga does not have the role and that she’s going head-to-head with Britney Spears for the coveted spot. According to a PopJustice contributor (whose comment was screenshot and tweeted by @TheGloryBritney), Spears’ team are reportedly negotiating for the event as well. But, with nothing more substantial than one comment to go on for this rumor, I'd argue this seems highly unlikely.
Whatever the case, I'm crossing my fingers and toes that it's Gaga who wins the role: she's releasing her first solo album in three years soon, she's rocking a new look and a new sound — and really, who's better than Gaga at taking on a big event? She's the queen of maximalism and that's why she would be perfect. Luckily, if the rumor above is anything to go with, we should know by the end of Sunday.
