Is A New Taylor Swift Album On Its Way This Year?

by Jordana Lipsitz

Despite Taylor Swift herself telling Vogue in April that she is taking a break from the music biz because, "I decided I was going to live my life a little bit without the pressure on myself to create something," many fans seem to be unconvinced. To date, Swift has always released a new album every two years — and Oct. 2016 marks two years since the release of her first foray into the pop world, 1989. Now, thanks to the magic of Twitter, fans have shared some intriguing theories which point to the idea that Swift could drop a new album in Oct. 2016, specifically Oct. 23. Sure, they might be reading just a tad too far into everything, but they could also be right, so the theory is worth analyzing.

As Mic points out, the evidence is there. First, since her self-titled album was released in 2006, Swift has dropped a new album every two years. The last album, 1989, was released in 2014, aka two years ago. Furthermore, except for 2008's Fearless, which was released in early November, every single one of Swift's albums have dropped in October between the dates Oct. 22 and Oct. 27. It's not like Swift has to continue on with her previous pattern, but it is sort of surprising that she isn't, especially because this album would come right around the time of her self-titled album's 10th anniversary.

Furthermore, one fan, Twitter user DylanLovatic, went even deeper and analyzed one specific date, Oct 23. According to DylanLovatic, If you do a bit of math and number science, the date Oct. 23, 2016 — 1+0+2+3+1+6 — equals 13 when added together. The number 13 is featured often in Swiftdom, as the singer reportedly considers it her lucky number. As Swift, who was born on Dec. 13, told MTV News in 2009, "I turned 13 Friday the 13th. My first album went gold in 13 weeks. My first number one song had a 13-second intro. Every time I've won an award, I've been seated in either the 13th seat, the 13th row, the 13th section or row M, which is the 13th letter." Hmm...

While it's nice to wish that Swift could surprise us with an album, there is one standard Swift trend she hasn't followed which makes it seem like we will be album-less. Before the release of every other Oct. album, the artist has dropped a single — and this has not happened yet. Sure, there's still a few days until Oct. 23, so a single could happen, but I'm doubtful.

We could take Swift at her word and believe that there won't be a new album coming out this Oct. Or, we can continue to speculate. We won't officially know until the month is over, though — and I don't know about you guys, but I'll be listening to 1989 over and over again for a while as a way to cope with the uncertainty.
