What If Luke Dies In The 'Gilmore Girls' Revival?

by Amy Mackelden

Luckily for fans of Gilmore Girls, Nov. 25 isn't too far away. Following months of speculation, years of wondering about the characters, and immense scrutiny over every trailer and publicity photo, it will finally be revealed what's happened to Lorelai, Rory, Luke, and the rest of Stars Hollow since 2007. Most of the rumors have focused on Rory's love life and which of her ex-boyfriends she might end up with (Team Logan, I'm sorry), but it's possible that there are some dramatic events in store for Lorelai and her on-and-off-again love interest, Luke Danes. While Scott Patterson is credited in all four episodes of the new show, and his character appears to be dating Lorelai, what if Luke dies in the Gilmore Girls revival? It might sound crazy, but it could happen.

Fans already know that the characters are dealing with the death of Gilmore patriarch Richard, which seems to send Lorelai on a journey of self-discovery in which she's reevaluating her entire life. Lorelai is even examining her relationship with Luke, which she appears to be discussing with a therapist in the most recent trailer. It seems possible that Lorelai might not end up with Luke for a number of reasons, but could Luke really die in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life ? Let's consider the facts.

It'd be pretty shocking if Luke died in the Gilmore Girls revival, but it feels as though the new episodes are going to provide closure for fans, and will be the final chapter in the story. Speaking to Us Weekly in August, Patterson said he'd love to come back for even more episodes of the show, if Netflix decides to make them. He said, “I can’t say too much about how it ends up, but for me personally, it seems like there is room, yes, absolutely. I would love to do it.” Despite the actor's enthusiasm, don't be lulled into a false sense of security and assume that all of your favorite characters are safe. Because even Patterson could be throwing a red herring fans' way.

One Tumblr user recently posed an important question regarding the Gilmore Girls revival:

As I was dozing off to sleep, I thought, very vividly, "OH MY GOD. WHAT IF LUKE DIES AND LORELAI & EMILY BOND ABOUT BEING WIDOWS."

While this theory is obviously morbid, it's clear from the trailer that the GG revival is going to explore grief in a lot of depth. And with Lorelai on a journey of self-discovery, exploring nature in a way akin to Cheryl Strayed in Wild, perhaps her life has been altered beyond repair?

Back in Sept. 2016, Patterson told Bustle that when it comes to Stars Hollow, Luke is “never gonna leave that town", which can be read two different ways. Either Luke is going to live in Stars Hollow and run Luke's Diner forever, or perhaps he's going to be buried there — or maybe his ashes are sitting on a shelf in the diner overseeing someone else pouring coffee for the town's residents. While I truly hope this isn't the case, the sadness on Lorelai's face in the trailer has me incredibly worried about the futures of all the characters on Gilmore Girls.

The good news is that fans only have to wait a few more weeks to find out Luke's fate in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
