These 'Moana' Easter Eggs Are Too Good

by Rachel Simon

These days, it's pretty common to walk into a movie theater and expect to see not just the movie you paid for, but hints, nods, and spot-on references to plenty of movies that've come before it. From Marvel to Pixar, many franchises now contain Easter Eggs to the previous films in the series, or at least in the company's overall on-screen universe. The latest Disney movie, Moana, is no exception. The musical, out Nov. 23, may not have quite the number of references to past movies by its studio as, say, an Avengers film would, but that's not to say that the Disney Easter Eggs in Moana are lacking.

They may not be plentiful, but Moana's references are nonetheless pretty great. They're fun (if way too quick) nods to some of Disney's most well-known previous films, and hardcore fans will certainly appreciate the references. Check out the biggest ones below, but beware, they might reveal a bit of the movie's plot, so if you don't want to know what happens, consider this your big spoiler alert. Now, without further ado, here are the top Disney Easter Eggs and references seen in Moana .

1. Sven From Frozen

In a scene midway through the movie, Maui is finally reunited with his magic hook, which lets him transform into other beings. While he tests it out, one of the beings he's shown briefly turning into is none other than Sven, the lovable reindeer from Frozen.

2. Sebastian From The Little Mermaid

In Moana's tag scene, Tamatoa, a giant crab monster, is laying on his back, unable to get up, after being left there by Moana and Maui. He grumbles that he'd get help from them if he were smaller, red and had a Caribbean accent — i.e. like the crab Sebastian from The Little Mermaid.

3. Baymax From Big Hero 6

In a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, Baymax, the star of Big Hero 6, is seen blending in as one of the Kakamora.

4. Ralph From Wreck-It Ralph

At the very end of the credits, a drawing of Ralph, the star of Wreck-it Ralph, appears on-screen right before the post-credits scene.

5. Flash From Zootopia

According to Reddit user Craazy Kat, Flash, the sloth from Zootopia , is briefly seen while Moana and Maui are in the underworld, as a masked creature with several arms.

6. Flounder From The Little Mermaid

In September, Moana directors Ron Clements and John Musker told Buzzfeed that eagle-eyed viewers could spot Flounder from The Little Mermaid at some point in Moana. It's unclear where, exactly, the beloved fish appears, but chances are that it's somewhere in the ocean.

7. Olaf From Frozen

The directors also revealed that Olaf from Frozen would have a brief appearance, but he's also nowhere to be seen. Perhaps he was switched out for Sven last minute?

Honorable Mention: Lin-Manuel Miranda's Son

At the end of the credits, there's a section devoted to "Production Babies," i.e. all the kids born to Moana cast and crew members while the movie was being made — including Sebastian, Miranda's two-year-old son. Aww.

Make sure you keep an eye out for all these Easter Eggs when you see (and re-see, because let's be real, you're gonna want to watch this movie again and again) Moana.
