21 Netflix Fixes To Cure Your Winter Blues

by Kristie Rohwedder

Here's a riddle: I visit once a year, but when I stay, I really make myself at home. I mess with the clocks, I fiddle with the thermostat, I impact your overall mood (for better or for worse), and I replace everything in your pantry with peppermint- and gingerbread-flavored snacks (for better or for worse). What am I? Look, I dig winter. I’m not here to drag its name through the cold slushy mud or whatever. If the weather outside is frightful, I'm more than happy to stay inside and watch something delightful. And fortunately, there's a lot of feel-good stuff on Netflix right now to keep the winter blues at bay.

No, I'm not talking about Christmas movies. I'm talking about fun, sunny, summery flicks and shows. I know the Netflix library seems like a never-ending Blockbuster holiday aisle this time of year, but there are plenty of cheery TV and movie options that don't include Santa hat-clad golden retrievers.

Are you up for a charming movie about friendship? Netflix has you covered. A TV series set smack-dab in the middle of a balmy summer? Again, the streaming service has some excellent choices. You want to get lost in a musical? Look no further. A laugh-every-second comedy? You’re in luck. Oh, you want magic? You better believe Netflix has magic, too. Let's get to it.

1. Grease

Let this one shoo-bop-bop the icicles away.

2. Wet Hot American Summer

The perfect movie (and the perfect TV series) up to watch with your favorite talking vegetable can.

3. Sing Street

Hold onto your face. Otherwise, this musical may charm the mug right off of ya.

4. Clueless

Only a Grinch wouldn't be majorly, totally, butt-crazy in love with Clueless.

5. Coming To America

A classic is a classic is a classic. But hurry, because this movie is leaving Netflix in January.

6. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Day-bow-bow, indeed.

7. 10 Things I Hate About You

If there is any musical number from a non-musical that can cure a cold, it’s Heath Ledger’s rendition of “I Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You.”

8. Heavyweights

Two words: Tony Perkins.

9. Dazed And Confused

Oh, just the best first day of summer movie probably ever. But just like Coming To America, you can only stream this classic until Dec. 31.

10. Footloose

The original, duh.

11. Jane The Virgin

Simply put, JTV is one of the loveliest, funniest shows on TV right now. I hope your heart is ready to be warmed.

12. The Endless Summer

This one’s a given.

13. Good Burger

Speaking of surfing, why not let this nostalgia tidal wave knock you over?

14. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days

Is this one of the best early ‘00s rom-coms, or is this one of the best early ‘00s rom-coms?

15. The Princess Bride

I mean.

16. Adventureland

Raise your hand if you're bummed it isn't ringer tee and ferris wheel season.

17. Amélie

Let this dazzling story sweep you right off your snowshoe-clad feet.

18. Freaks And Geeks

How was this only on for one season? Hoooow?

19. Moonrise Kingdom

I wonder what kind of bird Old Man Winter would be.

20. Lilo & Stitch

Surfing and aliens and Elvis Presley songs, oh my.

21. The Little Prince

Because sometimes, it feels so great to let the tears rip.

Happy Netflix and chilling — er, Netflix and warming... ? Ugh, I'm sorry.
