'Mean Girls' Boasts a Perfect '00s Soundtrack

by Kristie Rohwedder

10 years and at least 350 viewings later, Mean Girls remains a movie I laugh out loud at every single time. It's a perfect movie. If a martian kicked down my door and was like, "Bring me the best moving pictures from the 2000s," I'd probably pass out. When I came to, I'd frantically grab a handful of DVDs. I'd hand the stack to the martian and shakily say, "Here. You can have these," and point at where the door used to be. The martian would take my cue and go about its merry way.

One of the movies in that stack? You guessed it: Mean Girls. While the humor and the writing is timeless (g'bless that brilliant movie), the wardrobe and the music is very '00s. (Oh, as are the three-way call attacks.) The soundtrack has some classic rock songs thrown into the mix, but the overall vibe is '00s to a T. And I love everything about it. To this day, if I hear any song from Mean Girls, I not only imagine the corresponding scene, but I’m mentally teleported to a time when bootcut jeans and sweater twinsets were worn by yours truly with reckless abandon. Ah, 2004. You were so good.

I know the Garden State soundtrack will change your life, but Mean Girls undoubtedly gives it a run for its money for the title of Best Soundtrack of the '00s.

Don't fight. Embrace it. And while you're embracing it, please enjoy some of the incredible songs from Mean Girls:

Okay, I took some liberties with this list and included songs that aren't on the actual soundtrack, but are in the movie. Please don't be mad at me.

EXHIBIT A: “Pass That Dutch” by Missy Elliott

Yeah, I'll stomp it out to this like my hair is insured for $10k. Don't worry, I always watch out for trash cans.

EXHIBIT B: “Milkshake” by Kelis

Every time I hear this, two thoughts creep into my mind: 1) a milkshake sounds delicious, and 2) why don't I own a pink velour Juicy sweatsuit?

EXHIBIT C: “Operate” by Peaches

I feel all sorts of anxious whenever I hear "Operate," which is a shame, because I love it dearly. Why so anxious? Because costume parties stress the bajeezus out of me.

EXHIBIT D :“Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera

The best:

EXHIBIT E: “God is a DJ” by P!nk

I'm preppin' for a high school daaaaaaance!

EXHIBIT F: “Overdrive” by the Spice Girls, er, Katy Rose

EXHIBIT G: “Fire” by Joe Budden feat. Busta Rhymes

Put that fertility vase down.

Though they are not from the '00s, the following songs are too important to omit:

"One Way Or Another" by Blondie

Someone get me to an Origins and/or a Body Shop, STAT.

"Jingle Bell Rock" by Bobby Helms

Before Mean Girls, I was cool with the rock-n-roll Christmas tune. But now it holds a special place in my heart. And yeah, I do giggle at the thigh slap move part of the song every single time.

And finally, a tune that transcends space and time:

"The Mathlete Rap"

Thank you, Kristie. That's enough.
