He Had One Day Job We Do Not Envy

by Alanna Bennett

Here's a fun fact for all you pervs out there: Mad Men's Jon Hamm used to work in porn. Yep. Wipe your mind of the salacious images that just popped into your head, though: He was only a set dresser. Still, this is yet another instance in which Hamm can stand as a symbol to thousands of millennials: Not all is lost, and you can totally spend your 20s slumming it in porn and still go on to be a big success story. Call your mom and tell her that right now!

This revelation actually came a few years back, in 2009 when Hamm told Elle about the "soul-crushing" experience. And he recalled that experience again in a recent interview with Vanity Fair: “I was actually at that time working as a set dresser for Cinemax soft-core porn movies."

And, sure, Mad Men isn't the most chaste show on television — Don Draper's sexual history could fill Freudian textbooks — but overall he's found the experience much more rewarding on the AMC side than on the Cinemax side:

This is the best job I’ve ever had and maybe ever will have in my life — it’s so fun to play all of this. It can be relentlessly dark. It can be terribly sexually inappropriate, is a way to say it. But who else gets a chance to do any of that stuff? There’s so much there.

Let Hamm stand as a testament, then, fellow millennials. Let him guide us through the wilderness of our 20s. When you wake up in the morning, simply look in the mirror and chant to yourself: "Jon Hamm didn't ge

t Mad Men until he was well into his 30s. He worked in porn. I'm just working at Starbucks! And I'm still not as effed up as Don Draper."He shall be our guiding light.
