Warm-Weather Layers for Pre-Summer Nights

by Erin Mayer

Summer is (finally) coming! I know you've been longing to shed that winter coat for some time, but spring can be a tricky time of year. You can rock shorts and a crop top during the day, but once the sun goes down you'll really want a jacket. Or a sweater. Or a blanket. The unfortunate reality of spring is that you can't leave the layers behind just yet, no matter how ready you are to bare some skin.

But there's good news! Spring fashion is such that you can throw on an easy topper without compromising your warm-weather style. Layering up makes getting dressed all the more exciting. Plus, just think how much you'll long for a cool-but-not-too-cool breeze once it hits 90 degrees with maximum humidity. Summer is fun in theory, but nothing beats the joy of a clear, 60 degree night. So enjoy those chilly spring evenings while you still can! Pair your flirty sundresses (you can officially wear white ones now!) and denim cut offs with strategic cover-ups that won't leave your sense of style out in the cold. Short on ideas? Don't worry, I'll give you a few.

1. Denim Button Down

Melis Denim Shirt, $105, Asos

An easy denim blouse, like this two-toned version from ASOS, looks great tossed over all your sundresses. I'll caution you away from denim-on-denim, though, unless you're a serious pro, lest you run the risk of looking like an on-duty farmer.

2. Leather Jacket

Vegan Leather Metallic Jacket, $168, Free People

For when you need something a bit heftier. A leather (or vegan leather, in this case) jacket adds instant edge to your flowery summer wardrobe. Bonus points if you can master that stunning bed head pictured above.

3. Jersey Blazer

Jersey Jacket, $40, H&M

The spring blazer is a whole different species than the fall/winter blazer. When the weather gets warm, you want free-flowing fabrics, like this jersey number. Love that polka-dot print with a white t-shirt and jorts!

4. Luxe Sweatshirt

Swetc Sydney Embellished Stretch-Cotton Jersey Sweatshirt, $65, Net-A-Porter

Sweatshirts are in and those of us who love our PJs are stoked. A grey version with a crystal-embellished neckline is your best bet for an easy going topper that goes with absolutely everything in your closet.

5. Pullover Sweater

Cozy Day Striped Sweater, $16, Forever 21

A striped pullover sweater is cozy, but the knit is thin enough to toss in your tote bag during daylight hours. Choose a slouchy cut for a relaxed look that slides easily over whatever you're wearing.
