Fake Harry or Total Dreamboat?

by Anam Syed

"Wealth, power, good looks— it's every girl's dream," boasts the first episode of FOX's new show I Wanna Marry Harry. While we're not fans of the network's sexist assertions that all women want in 2014 isn't respect or love but to be a pretty pretty princess who wears a sparkly crown, we are fans of the down-to-earth impostor portraying the prince in the series. Regular Joe Matt Hicks stars as an ersatz Prince Harry, as 12 girls compete against each other in an effort to win his heart and live happily ever after. But who exactly is the man behind the new faux-royal dating show and what does he think of women across the pond?

The 23-year-old star Matt Hicks told Vulture that he was scouted by the show from a celebrity impersonators site, with gigs at promotional events for nightclubs to earn some extra spending money being his first foray into living the fake princely life. While we already know a little about our array of competing ladies, we're pretty convinced that Hicks, the man behind the character, is pretty interesting too.

Here are some of our favorite reasons why Hicks himself has got the goods to be a real life dreamboat, no royal pedigree needed.

1. HE'S LOVING THE NEW EXPERIENCE

While chatting with People, Hicks told the publication that he found American women to be "loud and forward" (a sentiment he also echoes on the show itself), but in a refreshing way compared to more reserved Briton culture, calling the change exciting. To his credit, he was nothing but sweet to the girls, even when some were slipping into time honored reality TV hot mess territory

2. HE'S TOTALLY A FEMINIST

A lot of people have tried to suggest the girls on the show might not be the brightest bulbs on the block. But don't push that sort of logic on Hicks, who in interview after interview has refuted the allegations of the contestants being dumb. In the Vulture piece Hicks even defends their motivations for appearing on the show, calling them realistic and looking for fun, not a wedding ring or royal title. You know, in the way people would automatically assume a dude is not crazy. Thinking women are just human beings like him puts him in the ultimate dreamy zone.

3. HE ACTUALLY STUDIED TO NAIL THE ROLE

In preparation for the show, Hicks had to study everything from the real Prince Harry's work and military history to things like polo, dance, and etiquette to adequately portray the prince's pedigree. Which means he's not just some shallow model pulled out of a stack of headshots— he's smart enough to do the work and actually perform.

4. HIS DATES WITH THE GIRLS ARE THE DREAMIEST

Seriously, I get the show is 80 percent fabricated, but those dates are 100 percent Hicks charm. Him trying on a New York accents during one of them was my fav. I could listen to him say "dawg" and "cawfee" all day.

5. HE APPRECIATES THE REAL FINER THINGS

Like giant plates of sausages and cartoons, which is a way better Sunday than something stuffy like polo.

6. HE'S KNOWN TO TAKE FAIRLY ADORABLE JETLAG SELFIES

With the show's PR blitz, Hicks has been jetting from city to city to talk all things Harry. Lucky for us, it results in some pretty cute tweets.

While 30 Rock may have concluded there's no such thing as Astronaut Mike Dexter, Hicks does seem to come pretty close.
