'Eyes Wide Shut' Ruined Kidman and Cruise

by Kaitlin Reilly

When you think of powerful celebrity couples, you might think of Beyonce and Jay Z, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, or even Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. But back in the 90s, the reigning Hollywood power couple was none other than Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. The celebrity couple met on the set of Days of Thunder in 1989, which would become the first of three films the couple starred in together. Cruise and Kidman married in 1990, and went on to star in Ron Howard's Far and Away as a happily married couple. Unfortunately, it was their final film together — Stanley Kubrick's 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut — that would also mark the end of their decade-long relationship.

Eyes Wide Shut turns 15 this year, which means that it's been 15 years since the "beginning of the end" of Cruise and Kidman as a power couple. It's not particularly surprising that it was Eyes Wide Shut that was the last film this couple worked on together — after all, Eyes Wide Shut has quite a bleak view of the modern marriage. Of course, it's not the only movie that hinted at a possible split between the film's co-stars. Here are X other films that jinxed Hollywood relationships.

Ben Affleck & Jennifer Lopez, Jersey Girl

The original Bennifer dated from 2002 to 2004 and starred in the film Gigli together in 2003. Though Gigli was a critical failure and a train wreck of a movie, the two decided to do one more movie together — Kevin Smith's romantic comedy Jersey Girl . Affleck and Lopez didn't get much screen time together in Jersey Girl, as Lopez plays Affleck's wife who dies 12 minutes into the film. The real-life couple didn't last much longer than that, as the two called it quits later that year.

Gwyneth Paltrow & Brad Pitt, Se7en

Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow began dating in 1994 after working together on the serial killer drama, Se7en. Could the, umm, unfortunate ending of the movie have doomer their relationship from the beginning?

Jennifer Aniston & Vince Vaughn, The Breakup

Vaughn was the first guy that Aniston was seen out with after that whole "Brangelina" thing happened, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. One sign that this romance was doomed from the very start was the fact that the new couple played bitter, just-split exes in their film The Breakup . The real couple split in 2006, months after the film was released.

Sienna Miller & Jude Law, Alfie

Jude Law and Sienna Miller met on the set of Alfie in 2004 and were engaged shortly after. The film, which starred Law as the playboy Alfie, may have predicted the unfortunate circumstances of their breakup. Law admitted to cheating on Miller with his children's nanny in 2005.

Courteney Cox & David Arquette, Scream 4

No! Not Dewey and Gale! These two met on the set of Scream in 1996, and by the second film both they and their onscreen characters were dating. By the fourth film, the two were having marital problems — both onscreen and off. While Dewey and Gale stayed together in Scream 4, the real-life couple did not — they officially filed for divorce in 2013, two years after their last Scream together.

Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson, Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part II

Vampires last forever, vampire-centric movie franchises do not. And, apparently, neither do the relationships between the franchise's co-stars. After Stewart and Pattinson wrapped up Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part II, the press took photos of Stewart kissing her Snow White and the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders — while Stewart was still dating Pattinson. Stewart made a heartfelt apology to Pattinson, but the two stayed broken up.
