On Her Bday, Taylor's Best Fashion Moments
Orange Is The New Black's Taylor Schilling can rock a jumpsuit better than most — except, perhaps, for the beautiful blue-eyed felon who is Jeremy Meeks. But when she's not locked up in Litchfield, Piper's real life alter-ego sure knows how to work a red carpet.
You might be surprised to hear, then, that she still needs a little guidance when it comes to getting dressed for a-list events. “I don’t have a connection to the fashion world at all,” she said in an interview with the New York Times last year. True, Schilling plays her off-screen style pretty safe, but she's been able to pull off quite a few memorable looks with the help of her stylist Penny Lovell and designer/fashion mentor Thakoon Panichgul.
To be honest, I'm so used to seeing Schilling in prison garb that practically anything she's wears IRL is a step-up. Thanks for setting the bar low, Netflix!
With the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards only a month away (August 25th on NBC), I can't help but wonder what Schilling — who's up for the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series — is planning to wear. This is Schilling's first Emmy nomination and she's up against some stiff competition: Lena Dunham, Edie Falco, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Melissa McCarthy, and Amy Poehler. It'll be a big night for the rest of the cast and crew, too, since the show's been nominated for a handful of other awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
But until then, we have something else to celebrate: Schilling's 30th birthday! In honor, here's a ranked roundup of some of her best fashion moments... so far.
13. At The Netflix Women Ruling TV Panel in 2014
Schilling looked white hot in a dress by A.L.C and an on-trend wispy braided updo. Her hot pink heels and cherry red lips lent bold pops of color for a fun and fresh look. Overall, I've loving this.
12. At The Hollywood Reporter's Next Gen 20th Anniversary Gala
A touch of netting turned this LBD dress by Zuhair Murad into something special. Schilling's dramatic lip and brows and sleek updo complemented the dress' sophisticated silhouette, but all in all this outfit fell a little flat.
11. At The Peter Pilotto for Target Event in 2014
While Schilling rocked this look from the Peter Pilotto for Target collection, there's no denying that it doesn't hold a candle to some of the more elegant options she's worn on the Red Carpet.
10. At The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards in 2014
Schilling wore this emerald green dress by Thakoon to the Golden Globes back in January, when she was nominated for Best Performance in a Drama Television Series for her role as Piper Chapman. She lost the award to Robin Wright but was definitely a winner on the Red Carpet. The lacy detailing, soft curls, and large glittering earrings are reminiscent of Old Hollywood and she pulls it off perfectly.
9. At The Reel Stories, Real Lives Event in 2014
To be honest, this is really the only angle that makes this dress by Roksanda Ilincic look good. That being said, I'm kind of loving the cape-like sleeves and shimmery silver back panel. The Christian Louboutin slingbacks are a definite win, although I'm not sure that I would have paired them with this dress.
8. At The 65th Emmy Awards in 2013
Schilling showed some leg in a backless floor-length dress by Thakoon, which was really the perfect balance of showing skin while not giving it all away. The flowing fabric and cascading curls made her look ethereal.
7. At The Variety Awards Studio in 2013
Schilling proved, once again, that white is her color (if we want to call white a color). She looked effortlessly chic in an oversized blazer atop an all-black ensemble. But really, I think it's the pigeon toes that are the icing on the cake. Am I right?
6. At The Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting Ceremony in 2009
I'm all about puffy North Face jackets and salty Ugg boots during NYC winters, so I'm envious of Schilling's sleek ensemble. I wouldn't say this all-black outfit is the most festive option for a tree lighting ceremony, but she looks so #flawless that I don't even care.
5. At The London Premiere of The Lucky One In 2012
This colorful Peter Pilotto dress is fun and plays well with her simple hairstyle. With little jewelry, minimal makeup, and no clutch in sight, I wouldn't be surprised if Schilling woke up like this. And isn't that the best kind of look?
4. At The Opening Night of the Off-Broadway Play Ivanov in New York City in 2012
Schilling does off-duty oh-so-well. The black leather pants, the oversized blazer, cowboy booties...heck, even her roots look good. Plus, I don't think I've ever seen chambray this awesome on a red carpet.
3. At The 100th Annual White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in 2014
Isn't it amazing what a tiny bit of sheer lace can do to transform an otherwise conservative floor-length gown? Well, that's exactly what we have here with this dress by Zuhair Murad, which was the perfect choice for this past year's annual White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. Schilling nailed the look by keeping her shoulder-length hair in simple waves.
2. At The Whitney Museum of American Art Gala in 2013
Schilling looked absolutely lovely in head to toe Louis Vuitton. There's something so feminine about a floral tea length dress. And those suede shoes? Need. Now.
1. At The LA Premiere of The Lucky One In 2012
And taking the number one spot is this black number from the Calvin Klein Collection. This dress fits Schilling like a glove and the way that the silver neckpiece cascades down the bodice is pure perfection, especially against Schilling's smokey eyes.
