No one in the history of celebrity time has been more committed to glasses and sunglasses than the absolutely fabulous Elaine Stritch. On Thursday afternoon, Elaine Stritch died in her home at the age of 89 — but her amazing acting career and quirky sense of style will live on in fashion infamy forever.
As a theater kid-turned-fashion editor, Stritch was always the ideal picture of what I wanted my post-middle age life to be. She was undeniably sassy — especially playing Jack Donaghy's mother on 30 Rock — and committed fully to her signature style in an effortless way. It never seemed like Stritch was dressing a little kooky to avoid fading into oblivion; she was dressing exactly how she wanted to, and frankly didn't GAF what anyone else thought.
Though her cool, often androgynous style was all-over amazing, it was the glasses (sun and not) that truly defined Stritch's look. She embraced the oversized frame trend way before any Brooklyn hipsters were shopping at Warby Parker, and owned more brightly colored plastic glasses than a Forever 21. While her work on the stage and screen was groundbreaking, her signature shades deserve a little love too. So, in memory of the epic actress, here are Elaine Stritch's TK sassiest glasses moments of all time.
