Jack White Will Never Be Royal

by Kristie Rohwedder

Quick math problem: What do you get when you add one of the coolest living rock 'n' rollers and one of the coolest pop songs in recent history together? I’ll give you a moment to grab a pencil and a piece of paper to work out the calculations. Ready? The answer is: A cool music moment. (I'm sorry, did I just say "a cool music moment" without a pang of sarcasm or irony? Who am I and what have I done with Kristie?) Yes, there is a fresh example: Jack White performed Lorde’s “Royals” during a concert in Milwaukee Monday night. And yes, it was flippin' cool.

A recording of the cover in its entirety has not made its way on the Internet, but one individual did post a snippet on Instagram. As awesome as the IG vid is, the truncated clip is such a TEASE. To quote an entirely different pop hit: Gimme gimme more, gimme more, gimme gimme more.

No, this isn't White's first trip to the Cover Song Rodeo, and yes, there has been many a noteworthy rendition of "Royals", but that doesn't make this rendition any less fun. What can I say? I will always be a sucker for a good cover.
