This is the Best Comic-Con News Ever

by Celeste Mora

The second day of Comic-Con and premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy have both been filled with a lot of craziness, but no announcement beats the news that Avengers: Age of Ultron will feature FOUR main female characters. Joss Whedon announced this at the London premiere saying, "There are four prominent female roles in the center of the movie, and a more balanced presence throughout the movie." He didn't quite apologize for the lack of female representation in past movies, but it's getting there. And in true Marvel Studios form, he also didn't predict which awesome superhero women would be joining the team. We know that Black Widow, Maria Hill, and Scarlet Witch will be in the film, but who's super-bachelorette number four?

The first possibility is a cameo from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Melinda May. Although I doubt her role would be "prominent," another significant crossover between the movie and series could reinvigorate both. But there are a few more options for this mystery Avenger, so don't subscribe to the Ming-Na Wen rumors just yet. It was rumored early in the Avengers 2 production that both Ant Man and the Wasp would be in the film, but they were later cut, so it's possible that Wasp might join the crew. However, the change in Ultron's origin story to cut out Ant Man doesn't bode well for the Wasp's inclusion, so this theory isn't the best out there.

In an ideal world, Joss would make up for lost time by introducing Captain Marvel in the next film. Even if she just flies the plane for a section of the movie, it might be the entree she needs to get her own solo movie in one of the already-confirmed slots through 2019. The unseen gods of Marvel Studios spoilers prevented Joss from confirming Carol Danvers' involvement, but he did say he liked the character, which is either a misdirect or a statement of personal fact. Let's hope he gives her a change to show the boys who's boss.
