During Fourth of July weekend, a TV special about Miley Cyrus' much-publicized Bangerz Tour aired on NBC. It got trounced in the ratings, likely due to the holiday timeslot. That said, TMZ reports that the FCC launched an investigation into the Miley Cyrus concert content of the special after receiving complaints about the singer's raunchy antics and costumes.
Since the special only drew 2.2 million viewers, I can't help but wonder if the "complaints" were the targeted work of conservatives and/or a vocal minority that were offended by what they saw, like Cyrus gyrating with her dancers and wearing revealing yet comedic costumes. Even so, the FCC is looking into whether or not the special violated broadcasting standards when it comes to sexuality. The network could be fined, which isn't that big of a deal at the end of the day.
That said, the Bangerz Tour, which began on Valentine's Day and ran through the summer, in North America and Europe, and was plagued by some cancelations due to Cyrus' illness, subsequent hospitalization, and the death of Cyrus' beloved dog Floyd, who she commemorated with a tattoo, was a wild and crazy ride. It was a glorious visual spectacle from which we could not look away, due in large part to the awesome attire the former Hannah Montana donned on a nightly basis.
These are eight of Cyrus' raunchiest tour costumes, from the Bangerz Tour and beyond, but first, check out the video of the special in question below.
1. Lips And Tongue Like The Rolling Stones
Cyrus had another set of lips, but these were affixed to her chest, like the famous The Rolling Stones logo. Her sparkly and silvery bodysuit came equipped with its own bright red lips. Since Cyrus sticks out her tongue as often as most of us blink, the tongue protruded from these lips because of course it did. So fun!
2. Miley Is So Money
Miley is money, baby, to borrow a phrase from Swingers, the 1996 indie film that introduced us to Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau. The high cut of the bodysuit showed off sidebum and I'm loving how the bills formed a wide cuff at her wrist; that's fashion-forward, for sure. Plus, you can't mess with the Mr. T-like bling, complete with a pot leaf charm.
3. Picnic Tablecloth Chic
Cyrus' red and white checked two-piece was picnic table or picnic tablecloth chic. She elevated it with the big, furry shrug. Sure, it features her signature high-waisted bottoms, but this one is tame by comparison.
4. Pot Leaf Print
Cyrus was fond of the bodysuits while bangin' all over the world. That makes sense, since they are easy and comfortable performance wear, something Beyonce totally gets. Though this one cuts high on the hip,she still remained more covered up than not. She's so in shape that you can't blame her for showing it off.
5. Lady In Red
Cyrus also rocked a sparkly and blingy two-piece with pouffy shoulders. It showed off her tight, toned, and taut abs and she looked like she was having fun while wearing it. She could dance and jump up and down with her Smilers with little obstruction due to her clothes.
6. Urban Cowgirl
For her MTV Unplugged special — which featured a casual cameo from oh, you know, Madonna — Cyrus changed costumes a few times, adopting her take on the urban cowgirl look. She paired a super baggy, destroyed, and blinged out denim shirt with similar jeans and a bikini top. It was Miley-as-cowgirl and so freakin' unique.
7. Nudekini
Her nude-toned bikini, which looked crafted of latex, worn at her instantly infamous performance at the 2013 VMAs, was not demure but it served its purpose. It didn't get in the way of her foam finger antics and she could dance and groove without her clothes getting in the way.
8. The One That Started It All
The sparkly teddy bear bodysuit, also worn at the 2013 VMAs, was the tour outfit that started it out. It was cutesy and revealing at once, but it also let us know that Miley Cyrus would be buh-ringing it and showing off all of her assets whenever she performed from that moment on.
