If Demi Lovato seemed extra confident in that daring red dress she rocked at the VMAs, it wasn't just an illusion. By her own admission, she's way more into herself these days, but in a healthy way. In what is probably the best Instagram post ever, Lovato shared four of her past VMA looks and revealed how she felt about her body in each of the outfits. Although she looked great in every photo, Lovato recalled being extremely hard on herself.
Referring to one photo, Lovato wrote: "This picture makes me feel so many mixed emotions. I remember the day I wore the dress in the very first picture. I remember asking for Spanx to flatten my stomach," the singer stated, recalling that she felt "so heavy and fat." She continued, "Now looking at this picture, you can clearly see my hip bones. It makes me sad because I wasted so many years ashamed of my body when I could've been living the happy and healthy life I live today."
True to her style, Lovato's words are raw, candid and extremely touching. They could easily be included on this list of the many things that make her amazing. The overall message of self-acceptance is just another example of her personal growth and definitely one to which women of all ages and backgrounds can relate.
Lovato's never been one to hide her vulnerable moments. She's addressed bullying and even revealed that she suffers from bipolar disorder and discussed its impact on her family. She's also gone on record about her eating disorder and has a PSA with The Mental Health Listening & Engagement Tour. Lovato choosing to speak out about these body images issues was yet another moving moment in what is probably one of many more to come.
