This Week's Box Office Is Same-Old Same-Old

by Alanna Bennett

If you were looking for a shake-up in the box office realm this weekend, I've got bad news for ya: It's not that time of year. The box office tops this weekend look more or less exactly like the box office tops of last weekend, and even suspiciously like the ones before that. In other words, Guardians Of the Galaxy is still on top and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is still holding strong in second.

It's not news anymore that Guardians Of the Galaxy's doing pretty damn well this summer — last week they earned the distinction of top-grossing film of the summer 2014. This week they've one-upped themselves: They're now the top-grossing movie of 2014. We've still got a few more months left in the year, and a few more big movies we're waiting on — I'm looking at you, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 — but that's a pretty rad (if unsurprising for a Marvel movie) development.

As for this particular weekend, Guardians raked in a weekend gross of $16.3 million, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles not being the top-grossing film of the year and grossing $11.8 million. Chloe Moretz young adult drama If I Stay came in third with $9.3 million.

We're exiting summer blockbuster season and slooowly but surely entering Serious Award-Wanting Movie Season, but for now Guardians Of the Galaxy's not relinquishing its hold.
