Talk Like a Pirate, Get Free Donuts

Some people might feel that International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a little played out. Even if you’re one of them, there’s a reason for you to embrace the ridiculousness one last time before giving it up for good: Krispy Kreme is giving out free donuts to anyone who talks or dresses like a pirate on Sept. 19. I don’t know about you, but I’m never one to turn down free donuts. Donuts are the best (except for this one).

According to Krispy Kreme's website, there are two levels of participation. If you prefer to wear your piratitude on the inside, expressing it in your speech but not your attire, then spewing forth a sentence or two of piratical speech will earn you one original glazed donut. If you’re slightly more dedicated, however, you can net yourself a dozen original glazed donuts — as long as you look the part. The bakery chain requires that you combine at least three items from the following list of piratewear in order to qualify (but note that no weapons are allowed. Safety first and all):

  • Eye patch
  • Pirate hat
  • Bandana
  • Peg leg
  • Parrot on shoulder
  • Pirate shirt or other loose white shirt
  • Knickers
  • Leather belt
  • Silver and gold necklaces and earrings
  • Pirate hook
  • Pointy black boots or ragged brown sandals

I am not at all embarrassed to admit that I already own three or more of these items.

The deal is good all day on Sept. 19 at participating Krispy Kreme locations, so plan your day accordingly. And hey, even if you don’t want to go through the rigmarole of talking or dressing like a pirate, you can still celebrate with a limited edition pirate donut. I’m not kidding — there’s a donut that looks like a pirate available for purchase at Krispy Kreme from now through International Talk Like a Pirate Day. It looks like this:

Why yes, I still play with my food; why do you ask?

As Food Beast notes, though: “Whether or not you plan on being a part of Talk Like a Pirate Day, remember that pirates are people, too. Don’t be a dick.” Words to live by, no? As are these:

(Sorry. It had to be done.)
