How To Dress Like Agent Simmons

by Rosie Narasaki

Did you know that Thursday is Elizabeth Henstridge's birthday? Yep, the adorable Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. geek-in-residence turns 27 today — and what better way to celebrate than with some casual cosplay? After all, Agent Jemma Simmons has some of the cutest geek-chic wares around, and they happen to be quite easy to recreate in the comfort of your own home. She may not have the bad girl je ne sais quoi of fellow agent Skye — or even the badass down-to-business look of Melinda May — but I've always been a huge fan of her wardrobe, and have spent a lot of time figuring out how to replicate it.

Plus, her look is classic with a twist, so chances are you probably have all the items you need stashed in your closet — it might be just what you're looking for, what with Halloween right around the corner. After all, it's the perfect last-minute costume — all you need to boost this look up to the Trick-or-Treat level is a lab coat with emblazoned with the S.H.I.E.L.D. eagle insignia, some safety goggles, and a plaid-loving Scotsman to finish your science jargon-heavy sentences.

But for an every day look, I'll keep to the basics (though if there are any single Leo Fitzs out there, give me a call!):

Shoes

When it comes to shoes, Jemma tends to go for quirky sneakers (like these Chuck Taylor Classic Colors) — very David Tennant-era Doctor Who approved. Lace up boots are another good bet.

Pants

When it comes to pants? Keep it simple. Jemma tends to go for either dark wash or black skinnies. Jeans are totally a matter of personal preference, but I'm a fan of these Rich & Skinny pants — they're flattering with just the right amount of stretch!

Button Down Shirt

A button-down in a cutesy-quirky print (like this subtly star-printed chiffon blouse from Uniqlo) print is absolutely perfect for the job.

Sweater

You'll probably find that a crewnecked sweater (preferably in a neutral tone) is essential to the Jemma Simmons look.

Collared Sweater

If you're pairing a collared shirt with a sweater is too much effort, you can always snag a collared sweater, like this one (currently on sale at the J. Crew Factory Store), and call it a day.

Blazer

This school boy blazer from J. Crew fits her aesthetic to a T — you know she'd love those gold buttons!

Jacket

She's no leather jacket fiend like her friend Skye, but when she does wear them, she tends to go for clean cut ones, like this adorable number from Madewell.

So there you have it — all you need to get the style of the most stylish nerd on TV!
