A Britney & Katy Duet Could Be Coming Soon

by Alex Kritselis

On Tuesday, Britney Spears told Extra that she would love to collaborate with Katy Perry someday — but is it possible that the two mega pop stars have already recorded a song together? I think so! Spears set the Internet ablaze last week when she shared a photo of herself in the recording studio on Instagram and Twitter, and I think that it's entirely possible that she was there to lay down vocals for a new song with Perry. Yes, I'm being totally, 100 percent for serious right now. Brace yourselves: The next great pop star duet could be just around the corner!

Spears hasn't collaborated with another major female pop star since 2011, when she appeared on the legendary "rihmix" of Rihanna's hit song, "S&M." It was an important moment in pop music history. On a scale of 1 to 10, the original version of "S&M" was probably somewhere around a 7.5 — and Spears shocking guest verse took that thing all the way to an 11. It was ridiculous. It was amazing. It was ridiculazing. To be honest, I don't know that a Spears/Perry collaboration could ever top the breathtaking elegance, grace, and beauty of the "S&M" rihmix — but I'd certainly love to hear 'em try!

So, why do I think that Spears and Perry may have already recorded a new track together? Put on your detective pants, 'cause we're goin' sleuthin'!

Exhibit A: Perry's Homage to Spears at the VMAs

Was Perry trying to tell us something when she arrived at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) with her blinged-out rat friend RiFF RAFF dressed head to toe in denim? I mean, sure, Spears and Justin Timberlake's unique look from the 2001 American Music Awards is pretty memorable, but why pay tribute to it now? On the night of the VMAs, Spears gave Perry her stamp of approval on Twitter, remarking that she "looked amazing" — was this the beginning of a beautiful friendship? A friendship that would involve recording a hit song together?? I wonder...

Exhibit B: Both Women Were Back in the Studio Recently

Just three days after Spears shared her studio picture online, Perry turned up in the studio, too. On Monday, Perry posted the above moving snapshot of herself behind the mic on photo sharing app PHHHOTO. Coincidence? Or cold, hard evidence?? Perry released her last studio album, PRISM , less than a year ago, so it seems unlikely that she would be working on a follow-up already. (To be fair, Spears' last studio album, Britney Jean, was also released less than a year ago and she told Extra on Tuesday that she's already working on new music, but Britney Jean's singles haven't been very successful, so she could be eager to move on). Was Perry back in the studio on Spears-related business? Hmm...

Exhibit C: Both Women Could Have Been Recording for Dr. Luke

It's no secret that both Spears and Perry have worked with music producer Dr. Luke in the past. Thanks to the above tweet, we can be pretty sure that Perry's most recent studio session had something to do with the good doctor, and I have reason to believe that Spears' did, as well. Emily Wright, a writer and producer who often works with Dr. Luke, retweeted Spears' studio pic shortly after it was posted online, commenting, "Yeah :)." Wright's tweet has since been deleted, possibly suggesting that she had said too much. The plot thickens! Were Spears and Perry in the studio to work on the same project? It kind of looks that way to me!

Of course, there are a lot of possible explanations for why Spears and Perry ended up back in the studio around the same time that have nothing to do with recording a duet (after all, they are both pop stars). Still, my suspicion is that there's more to this situation than meets the eye...

Don't worry, my investigation will continue!
