1D Had This To Say About Taylor Swift's Diss

by Alanna Bennett

Moppy British bands constructed out of cute boys and tight pants have been wreaking chaos in the hearts of fans and celebrity ladies alike since around the mid-twentieth Century. It's all that hair — it confuses the senses. For One Direction, the newest heir to the British Pop Throne, one of those chaotic hearts once belonged to Taylor Swift. Unfortunately for One Direction (but good for our revenge playlists), a Taylor Swift heart lost usually results in a minimum of one hit song written in your honor.

In this particular instance, One Direction faced a direct reminder of their alleged past indiscretions: When Swift won a VMA for Best Female Video for the video for her song "I Knew You Were Trouble," she took some time out of the acceptance speech to throw some shade at the ex who inspired the song. The broadcast of the awards show then cut to a shot of One Direction, which seems a little accusatory of the directors of the show considering that all reports point to the song not being about the band, but about one of Swift's other celebrity exes, likely either Jake Gyllenhaal or John Mayer.

Regardless of who Swift was intending to diss with her speech, she was captured onscreen (allegedly) muttering "Shut the f**k up" to Selena Gomez when One Direction was presenting. Now, the band's commented on what it's like to be on the receiving end of Swift's tall, willowy shade.

Louis Tomlinson commented on Swift the next night at the New York premiere of their concert documentary This is Us: "We were a bit confused. We thought she was actually calling out Niall [Horan, who was talking at the time], so the whole thing's a bit confusing."

Liam Payne also responded, saying that he "just thought it was a bit unneeded. I mean, you just won an award, it's like, concentrate on yourself!" Then a reporter called Swift's actions that night "lame" and Payne agreed, presumably also fist-bumping said reporter.

Harry Styles, the one who actually dated Swift for a few months last year, didn't actually have anything to say about her at all. His comments were left for Miley Cyrus and her... performance. "I thought it was very reserved," Styles said. "She's quite shy. I think she needs to come out of her shell a bit more."
