Lady Gaga On New Year's Eve Channels Liza Minnelli As Part Of Her Ever-Evolving Fashion Homages
Liza Minnelli, who is the daughter of Judy Garland and a major talent in her own right, was edged out of the infamous Oscar selfie of 2014. Some stars get no respect, right? Well, one of Lady Gaga New Year's Eve performance outfits can be considered a Liza Minnelli homage. That should help relieve some of the sting of being dissed by Bradley Cooper, Ellen DeGeneres and other Academy Awards A-listers.
Gaga performed with her Cheek to Cheek compadre Tony Bennett on New Year's Eve, ringing in 2015 while draped in a bling-sprinkled sheath and while rocking a close-cropped, black wig/'do. Minnelli is known for her huge, doll-like doe eyes and her black pixie and Gaga was channelling the Cabaret star's hallmarks while singing the night away with Mr. Bennett.
Gaga's makeup was way flashier, but she certainly exuded a larger-than-life, Liza-like vibe. Even if that is a semi-bun atop her head, I still look at Ma Monster and think "Liza!"
It also got me thinking that a Gaga x Minnelli duet would be pretty much everything. They are both belters. They both know how to create drama when it comes to their fashion choices. They are both Italian. They need to get it together since it's meant to be.
Gaga was shining bright like a diamond on NYE. Remember when she channelled Joan Crawford-like Old Hollywood glam last year? Or when she paid her respect to jazz singers and Ginger Rogers while promoting Cheek to Cheek? She certainly dips into the past and then modernizes her inspo.
Isn't Liza Minnelli totally adorbs?
Oh, and BTW, that's the back of the infamous Oscar selfie, where the petite Minnelli can be seen. #ShortGirlProblems.
