In what is potentially some of the best news that's been reported Tuesday, national treasure Amy Poehler has been named 2015's Woman of the Year by Harvard University's Hasty Pudding Theatricals. It's a big honor, to say the least: Not only does Poehler follow a long line of magnificent women who have won the honor before (they include Helen Mirren and Marion Cotillard, for starters!) but the award will recognize her inspiring accomplishments in comedy, entertainment, and, of course, her amazing feminist efforts.
As is customary during the event, the Hasty Pudding honoree gives a speech upon accepting the award. Considering this is Poehler we're talking about, I have absolutely no doubts in my mind that her speech is going to not only be epic, but also the stuff of legends. I mean — apart from every other great performance she's ever given, of course — her brilliant at co-hosting the Golden Globes with Tina Fey is indication enough of that. (It should be noted, however, that upon accepting the award last year, Helen Mirren actually twerked on stage, so Poehler does have a lot of upstage.) (It was probably the best moment of my life.)
Considering the male honoree for 2015 has yet to be announced, I figured it best to honor Poehler's amazing achievement — as well as her upcoming, sure-to-be-amazing speech — with some of the best moments from previous Hasty Pudding award ceremonies...
When Helen Mirren Twerked
I know I mentioned this before, but it was so amazing, I need to mention it again: At the age of 68 last year, Helen Mirren proved she's still way cooler than any 20-something on the scene right now and twerked her heart out on stage during her introduction. I can't make this stuff up.
When Claire Danes Was Absolutely Adorable During the Hasty Pudding Parade
I mean, I know she's best known around the Interwebs for her Carrie-on- Homeland -crying face, but Claire Danes looked about 10 levels of adorable (as well as the opposite of crying!) when she took part in the ceremony's subsequent parade upon winning the honor in 2012.
When Anne Hathaway Arm-Wrestled and Fought a Dragon For Her Award in 2010
Yeah, I really can't make this stuff up. Here's DigitalSpy 's account of the event from 2010:
The all-male cast donned drag to portray Hathaway's former co-stars Meryl Streep and Dame Julie Andrews, before forcing their honouree to sing, arm-wrestle and sword-fight a student dressed as 'Puff Daddy the Magic Dragon'.
Y'know, if it came down to it, I think that Amy Poehler could totally win an arm-wrestling match and slay a dragon for her award. Personally, though, I hope she's asked to reenact her performance of Kevin G's Mean Girls rap like she did with Fey and Lindsay Lohan in this video...
Congrats, Amy!
