J. Dornz & R. Pattz Are Friends! Worlds Collide!

by Arielle Dachille

I guess this is what it looks like when YA-romantic-fantasy-fiction worlds collide, eh? Judging by his latest interview promoting the opening of Fifty Shades of Grey, it sounds like Jamie Dornan and Robert Pattinson are friends. I repeat, this scenario exists beyond the realm of online fan fiction.

According to an interview with Dornan in Variety, he's been buddies with R. Pattz since last year. Reportedly, the two reportedly became friendly after Pattinson, allegedly, turned down the role of Grey. After all, the burden of being not only Edward Cullen, but also Christian Grey is probably too much for one person to bear. Dornan recalls that the last time he hung out with Edward Cullen — erm, I mean, Robert Pattinson, they ate dinner and got drunk together. Ya know, like most old chums.

Dornan says that he's "been around Rob long enough to see what it's been like for him." And by "it," I'm thinking he means Pattinson's meteoric rise to fame. While Dornan feels a kinship with Pattinson on some level, Dornan was careful to state that their situations are totally different. OK, dude...

He explained:

By the way, it’s not the same thing. We’re not the Twilight franchise. We’re a different thing. Whatever my situation is, it’s going to be different from Rob’s. They are incomparable.

Well, maybe Christian Grey doesn't glitter in the sun like Edward Cullz, but these stories are comparable in a BUNCH of ways. First of all, E.L. James was inspired to write Fifty Shades of Grey after reading Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series. Furthermore, both dude main characters are figures of sexy, sexy danger. Also, the crazy frenzy of fame that awaits Dornan is probably similar to the cult-like devotion that R. Pattz has inspired. I'm not sure if he's ready, but this guy is about to say "laters, baby" to his last vestige of normalcy. Thing is, I don't think he exactly gets it.

He continued:

I’m astonished at how many people are telling me my life is going to change. Everyone that I meet, especially in L.A. People who run studios or other actors or people who are strangers. Everyone has been saying that to me, "Are you ready?" I don’t have a good answer to that, because I don’t know what I’m meant to be ready for. Whatever happens, happens. I’ll just roll with the punches.

YEP, it's gonna be bonkers. Paparazzi, fans, t-shirts with your face on it. Roll with the punches, but understand that the punches are gonna be hard. Why is he not panicking?!?!

Luckily, his buddy Pattinson has been through all of that. I'm thinking he can mentor Dornan through the nutso fame transition. Think about it! Pattinson probably has a well of tips on managing fame, deflecting paparazzi, and dealing with insane fans. Overall, Dornan couldn't have a better fame coach than R. Pattz. Thing is, if they go to dinner together again once Fifty Shades is out, the Internet may spontaneously combust.
