Is Diane Sawyer Interviewing Bruce Jenner?

by Arielle Dachille

After months of rumors about his supposed intention to come out as a transgender woman, it's been reported that Diane Sawyer will likely interview Bruce Jenner in an ABC special broadcast. The olympian is expected to open up about his oft-speculated transition in the televised sit-down. If this interview actually happens, this means that Jenner will be taking control of his own story after months of tabloid rabble.

A source told Page Six on Monday that the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star will supposedly begin filming a tell-all special with the veteran journalist as early as this week. The network is reportedly planning to air the interview in May of this year, and people are predicting that Jenner will reveal the intention to start transitioning into presenting as a woman. Also, Jenner is supposedly filming a docu-series for E! about his transitioning process. Although the gossip press has been going bananas with the rumors of Jenner's alleged intention to come out as transgender, he hasn't publicly addressed the topic yet, and therefore this is all speculation.

This, however, hasn't stopped the media from reporting the story. Just last week, People supposedly got wind from an "insider" that the the rumors are allegedly true, and that the track star is supposedly "in a great space." On the slightly meaner side of this beat, there was the obvious debacle of the InTouch cover with Jenner's head pasted onto Sable from Dynasty 's body. Not to mention, the months of below-the-belt jokes about Jenner's "changing appearance."

But as Kim Kardashian reminded us last week in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, her dad should be allowed to "tell his story his way." If we're to take these stories at face value, the interview with Sawyer and the E! doc-series may be awesome, first-person opportunities for Bruce to do this. Thus far, his story has been hijacked by the tabloid media, and if he's going to come out, he should be the one announcing it. Furthermore, Jenner could address transgender identity on a larger scale, and potentially de-stigmatize the trans community within culture at large.

Until Bruce releases a statement himself, everything is still hearsay. But, I'm hopeful that this can be a positive thing. E! and ABC just have to keep it classy.

Editors Note: Until/unless Jenner has personally confirmed the transgender rumors and the intention to begin presenting as a woman, Bustle will continue to refer to the track star as a man and father, using male pronouns. Jenner deserves the courtesy of being able to "tell his story his way" when ready, as step-daughter Kim said, and Bustle will only make those changes if/when Jenner confirms.
