The Whedonverse Meets Greendale

by Caroline Pate

Nerds of the Internet, rejoice! There is yet another awesome guest star coming to Community (because John Oliver, Levar Burton and Walton Goggins weren't enough already), and this is one is practically a celebrity in the world of Joss Whedon. That's right, the man who was introduced to us as a creepy preacher in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and went on to star in Firefly, Nathan Fillion will now be on Community. He'll play Bob Waite, a head custodian "who’s not afraid to get his hands dirty but is smart enough to wear rubber gloves."

Bob Waite turns out to be a big political player when Annie and Professor Hickey (played by another awesome guest star, Jonathan Banks) attempt to navigate Greendale's political power structure.

Fillion hasn't been shy about his Community love, tweeting pictures when he visited the set last year. It's pretty adorable, but that's not even the best part: Fillion and Community creator Dan Harmon foreshadowed Fillion's guest spot a few days ago when Fillion was asked what show he'd like a guest spot on. Maybe he actually did come up with a whole guest plot line for Fillion in two days, maybe he didn't... only the dark bowels of Twitter will ever know.

But either way, it's definitely happening. Maybe one cult audience plus another cult audience will make NBC realize that Community has a big enough following to be taken seriously? Even if they don't, it's great that these audiences will be getting together.

Whedon and Harmon fans are pretty similar, give or take a vampire, those kids were bound to get together one of these days. If you haven't cross-pollinated across fandoms yet, go! Binge watch like your life depends on it! And if you have, then look at these pictures of Nathan Fillion visiting Community until it premieres on September 17.
