Butch Gilzean's 'Gotham' Days May Be Numbered

by Kayla Hawkins

The news that the lovely Jada Pinkett Smith is leaving Gotham is a disappointment, if not a huge surprise, because it means that Fish Mooney won't actually win and take over the city's biggest mob family. But could that lead Gotham to kill off Butch Gilzean, Fish's number one sidekick and righthand man? He's not a totally disposable character, because it's been enjoyable to watch his relationship with Fish deepen over the course of the season, but without her, there isn't much of a reason for him to stick around. In the last few weeks, we've seen Butch start to become friends with Oswald Cobblepot, so we could see how he might end up replacing Fish with Penguin — with their shared animal-inspired names, it wouldn't even be much of a stretch.

But something does kind of tell me that Butch without Fish is no Butch at all. Will he even want to live on without her? I'm not saying that Gotham is going to have them in some sort of suicide pact or something equally dark, but I wouldn't be surprised if Butch ends up as a casualty of Fish's departure, either willingly or unwillingly.

He Could Die In The Line Of Duty

Butch might die while serving his new boss, Falcone, and being forced to assassinate Fish, his former best friend. He could sacrifice himself so she can escape or be the last barrier between her and freedom, forcing her to kill him. No matter what happens between them, it would totally result in tears.

They Could Ride Off Together

Thelma & Louise or Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid style, maybe Fish and Butch will ride off into the sunset together in a blaze of glory. Even if the mobsters or the cops end up getting to them, if they're together and they go out on their terms, it'll be a good farewell to those characters.

He Could End Up In Prison — Which Is Basically A Death Sentence

I'm sure Butch would just barely rather be in jail than dead. Because in jail, he's bound to be totally useless to everyone, even the Falcones. And he could end up getting sent there by the Falcones as the ultimate punishment for maintaining his loyalty to Fish.

I'm hoping for the best when it comes to Butch, but we should be realistic and get ready to say goodbye to two character before the first season ofGotham ends.
