The Secret Recipe Behind That Olsen Hair

by Tori Telfer

A general rule of thumb for style-conscious women is this: Whenever life gives you an opportunity to be a little bit more like the Olsen twins, you take it. You take it and run with it. So when The Coveteur did an interview with Mark Townsend behind those miraculous, effortless Olsen manes, I knew we all had to steal some of their coiffeur's secrets.

Townsend informed us all that the Olsens are “blessed with having great texture and natural wave in their hair so we don't have to spend a lot of time to get that perfectly tousled look.” OKAY, MARK, THANKS FOR THAT. But friends, there was one piece of information so amazing and so utterly usable that we need to steal it now: a homemade deep conditioner recipe that Townsend whipped up for Mary Kate and Ashely to take on vacation with them. They loved it so much that they demanded more, and Townsend says he felt "a huge difference in their hair" afterward. Sold!

Here's the recipe, with amounts added by me... I've made enough deep conditioners in my day to feel confident in this:

Magical Olsen-Approved Deep Conditioner

½ cup coconut oil, melted½ cup almond oil¼ cup jojoba oil1 tablespoon Vitamin E oil, or 3 to 4 Vitamin E caplets

Add all ingredients to a clean glass jar (old jam jars are amazing for this sort of thing) or an clean plastic bottle (from a former beauty product, perhaps?). Shake well. If using Vitamin E caplets, puncture each one with a safety pin and squeeze out the oil into the deep conditioner.

Use it twice a week for up to an hour, like the Olsens do, and shampoo well to remove. Hello, New York Minute locks.
