'S.H.I.E.L.D.' Doctor Garner Is More Than May's Ex
Seems like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is always adding new characters, huh? We first heard that two-time Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood would be joining the cast back in December, and his new identity on the show was released shortly after that — turns out Underwood will play Doctor Andrew Garner on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. , a neurologist and forensic psychologist... who also happens to be Agent Melinda May's long-estranged ex-husband.
And you now what else? Marvel revealed that Dr. Garner is also an Index specialist, meaning he works with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s super-powered individuals, like Skye (and maybe even Raina — which would be great, because it's about time we got some answers re: her thorny new looks). However this also makes me think that the team's not going to be able to keep Skye's Terrigenesis a secret much longer.
After all, now that Skye's proverbial cat is out of the bag, you can bet gossip about her newfound powers is going to start flowing like crazy. Whether over-zealous Simmons leaks the news or Coulson tells them as part of an informed gamble, the whole team is going to find out eventually... and when S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ finally finds learns of her earthquake-bringing powers, we'll likely be seeing a lot of Dr. Andrew Garner— and here are five reasons why that's awesome:
It's Blair Underwood
Come on, Blair Underwood making semi-regular appearances on your Tuesday night TV viewings? What's not to like?
Agent May & Dr. Garner, Sitting In A Tree
I think Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter can step aside, because Agent May and Dr. Garner are going to be taking over as hottest (ex)spouses, and it's going to be epic. It's a relationship sure to make for equal shares of high drama and comic relief. Speaking of which:
Potential Love Triangles?
Something tells me overprotective Coulson is not going to be very happy about his right hand woman's ex-husband coming back on the scene. Whether or not Dr. Garner's presence puts some pressure on the (very) slow-moving Coulson/May 'ship remains to be seen, but it certainly wouldn't be unwelcome.
He Has Interesting Implications
An Index expert = more superpowered characters? Now that we're really getting into the supernatural side of things, it might be fun to see more Inhumans other gifted individuals on S.H.I.E.L.D. Plus, hearing his take on the matter as a specialist only makes the sci-fi side of things more compelling.
He's Another Wild Card
At this point, we don't know if he's as loyal as Leo Fitz or as untrustworthy as Bobbi and Mac. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has a lot of moral grey area, but the more that occupy that confusing space, the better!
