Bye Bye, NBC Shows

by Lindsay Mannering

Well, that didn't take long. After just three episodes each, NBC has cancelled Ironside and Welcome to the Family , or, as you may know them, That Show Where Blair Underwood Is in a Wheelchair and Is a Cop, and That Show With That Guy From Desperate Housewives & That Funny Dad Guy From Glee Who Now Plays a Funny Dad Guy With a Pregnant Teenaged Daughter, I Guess. The network has pulled the plug after the ratings didn't deliver.

The Hollywood Reporter points out that these are the first cancellations of the Fall for the peacock network, but ABC beat them to the killjoy punch by axing Lucky Seven two weeks ago. CBS has declared one of their shows dead on arrival: We Are Men is gone, as well.

It's no surprise that Underwood's Ironside didn't take off, and Welcome to the Family, while not inherently horrible, was simply unoriginal. NBC has announced that Community and Chicago PD will fill in the vacancies left by their failed shows — the Joel McHale comedy will return on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 8 p.m. and the spinoff of Chicago Fire will premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 9 p.m.

While CBS and Fox seem to know what they're doing, NBC's lineup has had a lot of trouble finding comedies that resonate and stick with audiences. ABC is having issues as well, but we're hoping Trophy Wife doesn't hit the cutting room floor.

RIP Welcome to the Family and Ironside. RIP.
