Good News, 'Last Man On Earth' Fans!
When a new show hits the air, I'm always nervous about falling in love with it in case it doesn't get renewed for a second season. Many an amazing show has come and gone without getting a chance to develop a multi-season arc, so it's normal to be a bit wary about getting too attached. Thankfully, that's not something we have to worry about with the new Will Forte-starring comedy The Last Man On Earth — Fox has confirmed Season 2 is officially happening. Amazing news for the quirky comedy and viewers alike! [UPDATE: Deadline reports The Last Man On Earth will return Sep. 27.]
If you're unfamiliar with the premise of The Last Man On Earth, it follows Phil Miller (played by Saturday Night Live alum Forte) in the year 2020 after a virus has swept the earth, leaving only him alive — or so he thinks. Along the way, Phil becomes desperate to find other survivors and after failing to do so, plans to end his life. Thankfully, that plan never comes to fruition after he meets Carol (played by Kristen Schaal) and Melissa (played by January Jones). They eventually meet even more survivors and things get crazy — not to mention more hilarious. Needless to say, it's full of laughs.
Fox Entertainment President David Madden is one of the show's biggest champions and was thrilled to hear it'll be back for another season. In a statement issued with the renewal announcement, Madden said:
"We knew we had something special with The Last Man on Earth. It's one of those rare shows that continues to add depth and dimension to its unique premise, week after week. We are so thrilled that this incredibly bold, original and inventive series has been embraced by both fans and critics, and we cannot wait to see where the creative genius and inspired vision of Will, Phil and Chris take us in season two."
Given that The Last Man on Earth has been the number one comedy in the 18-34 demo and with men 18-49, chances are there's staying power and we're in for a lot more fun in Season 2.
As for whether or not the entire cast will return — while none of The Last Man on Earth's stars have reacted publicly (they're probably too busy celebrating with gallons of champagne and diamond watches... that's what Hollywood people do, right?), it seems definite that Forte is definitely going to be back (as Madden's statement indicates). As for Schaal and Jones, that remains to be seen, but no announcement of imminent cast departures is definitely a good sign.
The Last Man on Earth Season 1 is currently airing on Fox.
