Manhattan's Elite Meets England's Royalty

by Kelsie Gibson

Ever since the finale of Gossip Girl in 2012, television has been waiting for a show to fill Blair Waldorf's Christian Louboutin Pumps (figuratively, not literally of course) and while we may not have a new Queen Bee, we definitely have a crowning jewel. While Gossip Girl followed the "scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite," E!'s brand new series The Royals, gives a whole new meaning to upperclass royalty.

As E!'s first scripted series, The Royals is stepping up to the throne as TV's new reigning must-watch show. Loosely based off of the real-life royal family, the show has been praised for its high drama and decadent costumes, much like Gossip Girl during its prime. Although it has some big shoes to fill, The Royals is doing a pretty good job so far, announcing plans for a second season before the show even aired, an accomplishment not even Gossip Girl can claim.

While the shows follow a similar structure, they have other similarities as well. For one, Elizabeth Hurley graces us with her presence in both of them, but fans have also noticed a similar trend between the show's most dysfunctional relationship, Princesss Eleanor and Jasper. Perhaps we love the show so much because it reminds us of our favorite characters from Gossip Girl.

Prince Liam — Nate Archibald

Not only do the two look alike, they both possess that charismatic attitude to do what's right no matter what people think.

Princess Eleanor — Jenny Humphrey

While comparisons between Princess Eleanor is the Blair Waldorf have been made, I have to disagree. Blair may have been a little crazy, but she was never as wild as Eleanor. No, I think this princess matches more with a different Queen Bee — Jenny Humphrey. It also helps that the two have a keen eye for fashion.

Ophelia — Dan Humphrey

The typical outsider wanting in saga. Even Ophelia said it herself that she wants the picture perfect fairytale. But take lessons from Dan himself, fairytales only happen in books.

Jasper — Chuck Bass

He's the bad guy you just can't help but love. He may seem devilish now, but you wait, just like Chuck Bass I bet there a soft spot in that dark, tormented heart of his.

King Simon — William van der Woodsen

Mr. van der Woodsen was his own kind of royalty — a billionaire to be exact. And just like King Simon, he cares deeply for his wife and kids.

Queen Helena — Lily van der Woodsen

Coming from very little in comparison to where they are now, both Queen Helena and Lily are extremely materialistic, often putting their own needs in front of their family and friends.

Alistair Lacey — Rufus Humphrey

While we don't know too much about Alistair quite yet, we do know that he and Helena have a past (one that goes way back before she was queen). Only time will tell, but this relationship sounds a lot like Rufus and Lily's.

Cyrus — Jack Bass

Before he turned good guy, Jack Bass was the irresponsible younger brother of Bart. Sound familiar? If his drinking problem and sex life didn't give it away, both Jack and Cyrus will stop at nothing to get what they want, even if it means sabotaging their relationships.

Gemma - Serena van der Woodsen

Blonde, fashionable, pretty, just like S, Gemma is the "it girl" around town. Even though she may not have the guy right now, she seems like she's the type of girl who always gets what she wants.

Princess Penelope & Princess Maribel - Minions

Just because they're not the first in line for royalty doesn't mean they aren't going to try. Just like Blair's Minions, these sisters are essentially Princess Eleanor's right hand women.
