Ugh, I Hate That I love this New 1D Song

by Lindsay Mannering

It's times like these where I sit back and wonder what went so wrong. Was it my all-girls education that made me this way? Can I blame my parents? Is it in my genes? Because I am immune to the power of pop. It's as if I have a fever, and the only prescription is repeated choruses, a pleasant melody, and irresistible hooks. So, that said, I am way, way too old to be revealing this, but One Direction's song "Story of My Life" is like, totally, like, amazeballs. And I'm not even being funny. The boy band's song was released Friday online and if you haven't treated yourself to the vocal stylings of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson yet this afternoon, by all means, help yourself to a heaping pile of pop.

The song is off their album Midnight Memories, which drops Nov. 25., and is the second single to be unleashed on the masses. The first was July's hit "Best Song Ever," but "Story of My Life" and "Best Song Ever" are very different — the former is as bluesy as a pop song by a boy band is allowed to be called, and the latter is an EDM nightmare that will make you want to use those stupid high-heel sneakers to kill any and all tweens who dare cross your path. "Story of My Life" is good, "Best Song Ever" inspires murder.

Because you're wondering, "The Story of My Life" reminds me a lot of Miley Cyrus's "The Climb," (seriously, who can I blame for my taste in music?), a song that I unabashedly love and still listen to at least once a week. FINE! Once a day. It's sing-songy, it's easy listening, and it has an undeniable psych-you-up quality that will make you squint your eyes, look to the sky, and subtly pump your fist next to your hip.

Try and deny its catchiness, I dare you.
