What's Mariah Carey's New Single About?

by Alex Kritselis

We're less than two weeks away from the premiere of Mariah Carey's new single, "Infinity," and details are starting to pour in. So, what's the track about? According to Showbiz 411's Roger Friedman, "most people will infer" that "Infinity" is about Carey's divorce from Nick Cannon. Whoa. This is gonna be good! Apparently, the whole concept behind the song is that "infinity isn't forever." Well, that sounds... devastating. No one knows how to pen an emotional breakup anthem quite like the Elusive Chanteuse, so this information has piqued my interest. Friedman also describes the track's lyrics as "witty" and notes that its hook is one "you won't forget." Wow. I'm ready.

Now that we know a little bit about "Infinity's" subject matter, we can turn our attention to its sound. Is it modern? Is it retro? Did Mimi jump on any current radio trends? Friedman writes that "Infinity" is "old school R&B," but "right on the money for NOW" (emphasis his). I'm not 100-percent sure what that means, as old school R&B isn't exactly a genre that's burning up the charts at the moment, but I suppose it gives us a general sense of the song's sonic direction. To be honest, I don't find the description especially promising, but I'll try to keep an open mind.

Now, to address the big question on every fan's mind: Will "Infinity" be a hit? It serves as the lead offering from Carey's upcoming collection of 18 No. 1 singles, #1 to Infinitywouldn't it be cool if the tune became her 19th chart-topper? Yes, it would be cool. Unfortunately, given the star's recent track record, I don't think it's likely. At the end of the day, however, I just want to hear good music. After all, commercial success — which Carey has had plenty of in the past — isn't everything.

"Infinity" debuts worldwide on Monday, April 27.
