Beyoncé Wants You To Take A Gym Break

by Kristie Rohwedder

I rarely question anything she does or says, but Beyoncé recently insulted women who exercise. As the singer told Very Magazine, "It's sexier when it doesn't look like you go to the gym." Uh oh, Mrs. Carter. You are one of the sexiest humans on the planet, but you miiiight want to step away from policing ladies' bodies. I see the "accept your body as is" sentiment buried in that statement, but if a woman wants to look like she goes to the gym, that's her call. If she wants to look like she doesn't go to the gym, that's also her call. Also, what does it mean to "look like you go to the gym?"

She explains that when she's not on tour (and dancing a boatload), she runs on a treadmill and goes to a personal trainer, but she doesn't go too wild with the working out. Uh, to be fair, her workout regimen still sounds fairly intense. But that's just me. I'm not a deity like she is.

She goes on to say, "Confidence makes a woman sexy. Women should not get caught up in someone else's definition of beauty," which sort of contradicts the whole "it's sexier when…" declaration she made before. Oh yikes, B. She has been a wonderful pro-body image and self-acceptance role model in the past, so I don't think her goal was to crap all over gym enthusiasts. Like I said, it kinda goes against her overall message. I might be filling in the gaps here, but I think her statement was more of a, "Hey, be healthy! Don't break your soul and spirit and body at the gym because you believe you have to look a certain way" sort of thing. Everyone feel sexy however they feel sexy, ya dig? Unless it's through illegal means. I don't condone breaking the law to feel sexy.

So, I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt. I mean, this is the same woman who told Teen Vogue back in 2010, "The best thing I can say to young ladies is accept the body you're in. If you have curves, love your curves. The thing to strive for is to have the best healthy body you can have. It's really not about being skinny or being curvy. What matters is that you love yourself and you are taking care of your health." Yes! Agreed! Love yourself! Go to the gym or don't go to the gym! Be healthy! Feel happy!
