We Need More Dawn, 'Mad Men'

by Rosie Narasaki

Season 7B of Mad Men has been a lot of things, but in its brevity (only 4 episodes left, can you believe it?), there are a few characters that still haven't gotten to take their victory lap yet — and one of those characters happens to be secretary extraordinaire, Dawn Chambers. Where's Dawn during Season 7B of Mad Men ? It's looking like only time will tell. Unfortunately, there's no word yet on whether or not Teyonah Parris will be reprising her role as the ever-sweet Dawn, but a girl can hope — after all, with a showrunner as secretive as Matthew Weiner, who knows what could happen?

It's worth noting that we actually left Dawn in a relatively cheery place — in fact, I'd go so far as to say that she got as happy an ending (if indeed it was an ending) as anyone hanging around the SC&P offices could hope for: Last time we really spent some time with her, Dawn was promoted to Joan's old job as office manager. The position came with some perks, too — Dawn now has her own office, and if Joan was any indication, she's well on her way to becoming the reigning queen of SC&P.

It would be interesting to check in with her and see how she's settled into the position — in a lot of ways, she's perfect for it, and I'd like to think that she could diplomatically handle the extra bit of control over the rest of the secretaries without going on too much of a power trip, the way Joan was wont to do at times — in other words, if she's the new Queen of the Secretaries, I'd like to think she'd make a benevolent ruler.

That said, it would be pretty awesome if we checked back in with Dawn and she was suddenly Joan 2.0, leading Peggy 2.0 through the office on her first day, whilst making disparaging remarks and blowing figurative and literal smoke all over the place. It would be an unexpected character development, akin to the way Harry Crane went from slightly earnest to practically pure evil, and the way that Ken Cosgrove went from cad to tragically misunderstood one-eyed budding supervillain.

Whether she's gone full Season 1 Joan, or if she remains one of the last good people at SC&P (no mean feat), it sure would be nice to see her again in Season 7B!
