These two are proving once again they are quite the dynamic duo. During Wednesday's Grace and Frankie Netflix series premiere in Los Angeles, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin showed Bruce Jenner support by speaking highly of the Olympian to reporters. For the two actresses, they couldn't be more proud of Jenner, his journey, and the bravery he showed during his 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer.
Tomlin declared, "That was amazing. I mean, he's so well-known, a part of such a prominent family." Fonda then added, "Plus, being an Olympic athlete. It's important what he's doing!" As for Tomlin, she agreed with her co-star and said, "The world's greatest athlete. And so, it's kind of refreshing to see someone like that, it can be important."
On Friday, April 24, Jenner confirmed that he identifies as a woman, which not only turned out to be an eye-opening discussion with Sawyer, but an interview that had an emotional effect on so many. Thankfully, Jenner found much support, especially through social media, during the broadcast. And he continues to receive love and kindness just like Fonda and Tomlin demonstrated during their premiere event.
These two actresses are no strangers to Hollywood or judgment. Not only has Fonda received backlash for opposing the Vietnam War, but Tomlin, a now openly gay actress, hid her sexuality for years, which I'm sure had to do with the era, not to mention whether coming out would affect her career and livelihood. So, seeing as the two know what it's like to be scrutinized in the public eye, and the fact that Fonda and Tomlin are both supporters of the LGBT community, it's no surprise that these two icons are extending support to Jenner. Still, it's a great thing to see.
Editor’s Note: Per Jenner’s stated preference, Bustle will continue referring to Jenner using he/his pronouns for the time being. We will follow his lead and make any changes to this policy as needed in the future.
