Given that Caroline was conveniently MIA during last Thursday's episode, viewers still have no idea what the future has in store for her relationship with Stefan. Now that both of their humanities are firmly turned back on, you'd think this upcoming TVD wedding would present the perfect opportunity for a Steroline reunion. (Nothing puts a romantic spin on things like a marriage ceremony.) However, I'm finding myself to be somewhat skeptical about the whole thing. In this week's synopsis for The Vampire Diaries episode "I'll Wed You in the Golden Summertime," it states that upon Caroline's return, she "comes to a realization about her and Stefan's prospects of being together." So what does this mean? Unfortunately, in this case, I think it suggests that Caroline will put an end to Steroline and decide that she just wants to go back to being friends.
I know it's not something diehard 'shippers want to hear and it would certainly be unfair, given that these two really never got the chance to be a proper couple. Between Caroline's mom dying and the two of them hooking up during their humanity-less reign of terror, their budding relationship has faced so many different obstacles that it might be impossible to recover from. For all we know, Caroline could take it all as a sign from the universe that they just aren't meant to be together. Granted, it's hard to say for sure what's on her mind. We won't know that answer until later tonight. But does this really look as though Stefan is being told happy news?
That is definitely Caroline that he's talking to and he definitely does not seem to like whatever it is she has to say. Granted, the fact that she hasn't been taking his calls could already be an indicator that things between them are dunzo. (Plus, she said as much shortly after her humanity switch was flipped back on.) But now that she's had time to think everything over, I think she'll still hold true to her initial decision, though it'll be for different reasons.
Before it felt more like just a kind of an instinctive reaction to all the horrible things she did during her humanity-less spree. And Stefan was a very big part of all that. But over time I think she's just come to realize that she's a different person than she was before she flipped that switch. (A sentiment poor Stefan is all too familiar with.) And who knows, maybe now she's decided to start over somewhere new. (Like New Orleans, perhaps?) OK, now I'm just placating to my own wishful fantasy, but that still doesn't mean that I'm wrong regarding Stefan and Caroline's future… or rather, lack thereof.
Sorry, folks, but it may be time to stick a fork in this duo. They're done.
