This Groom Shut Down Meninists On Twitter

by Eliza Castile

When it comes to dealing with trolls, there are two kinds of people: the ones who refuse to give them the attention they want, and people like Adam Harris, the groom who shut down meninists on Twitter after they mocked his wedding photos. In case you've been blessed enough to avoid them in your life so far, "meninism" is an online movement in which men demand the same rights as women. It's a backlash against feminism that's exactly as silly as it sounds, but that hasn't stopped meninists from being as vocal as possible about anything they deem offensive, like women who don't thank them for deigning to hold the door open and the unrealistic standards perpetuated by Magic Mike posters. You know, the important stuff. According to BuzzFeed, the "Meninist Tweet" Twitter account recently took the time from its busy schedule of tweeting offensive comments to caption a photo of 23-year-old Adam Harris seeing his bride for the first time on their wedding day. It's an incredibly sweet photo of a special moment, which means the Meninist Tweet caption was respectful and appropriate, right?HAHA nope. The tweet was just as gross as you'd expect.

Fortunately, Harris was made aware of the tweet's existence almost as soon as it was posted. He told BuzzFeed News that his wedding day pictures had been a meme for months, so his friends were on the lookout for use of his photos. While many would have ignored the tweet, Harris said that he is "actively opposed to the offensive ones." Luckily for us, this meant that he chose to respond publicly, and his reply was pretty much perfect. (Careful: Harris' response may cause you to fistpump in your chair, startling everyone in your vicinity. Not that I'm speaking from experience, of course.)

If you just gave Harris a mental high-five, you're not the only one. At the time of this article, his tweet has been retweeted more than 80,000 times since it was posted on May 22nd. There are trolls, as always, but the vast majority of users are congratulating him, both on his nuptials and his spot-on response.

What do you know, it looks like something good came out of meninism after all. Color me astonished.
