These Rick Santorum Memes Are Perfection

by Jo Yurcaba

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, a Republican, officially announced his 2016 presidential run Wednesday. Santorum was the runner-up behind Mitt Romney in the Republican primary four years ago, and now he's joining the race against six other Republican hopefuls. In 2012, Santorum championed himself as a representative for opponents of abortion and same-sex marriage, according to Bloomberg. This year, he's emphasizing his eight years on the Senate Armed Services Committee and what his foreign policy would be with respect to the Islamic State. That's all great and important, but these Santorum memes are also super important, and they will also teach you a lot about his policies.

Santorum is most famous for his staunch Catholicism, which has positioned him and his wife, Karen, firmly against birth control and abortion, even in cases of rape. Santorum has seven children, most of whom his wife has home-schooled. When he was elected to the Senate in 1994, he was well known for focusing on spending issues such as reducing farm subsidies and tightening government welfare benefits for the poor, according to Bloomberg. He calls his economic policy "blue-collar conservatism" and even wrote a book by the same name.

Santorum made the news recently for his ridiculous declaration that he would not attend a gay wedding. Years ago, he even once compared being gay to incest and adultery according to CBS News. In response, activist Dan Savage began an internet campaign to link Santorum's name to graphic sexual acts when Google searched. The results dominated Google for years. The below memes call Santorum out for his hypocrisy, exclusionary views, and generally ridiculous comments (like the time he said he would ban pornography).
