Caitlyn Is The 1st Kardashian/Jenner To Cover 'VF'

by Julia Guerra

On Monday morning, Caitlyn Jenner's Vanity Fair cover was revealed to the public, and the article introduced the Olympian-turned-reality-star's true identity to the world for the first time. The Kardashian-Jenner clan has been splashed across pages of magazines time and time again, including spreads in Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Paper, Marie Claire, and Harper's Bazaar. However, Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce, is the first of the Kardashian-Jenner family to appear on the cover of Vanity Fair.

Though it may be considered a fashion magazine, Vanity Fair sometimes acts as a more serious platform than its competing publications. While the Kardashian-Jenners are constantly eaten up by the press, with titles placing them on their covers for a surefire boost in sales (note: even fashion bible Vogue has starred Kim and Kendall on its cover), Vanity Fair has waited until now to debut a member of the family on its cover.

Hooray for Kim for going blonde for five seconds and congrats to Kylie for finally coming clean about her lip injections, but Caitlyn Jenner has an important story to tell and a positive platform to speak out on. Caitlyn Jenner embodies the Vanity Fair cover girl.

During the behind-the-scenes video of her photo shoot, Jenner boldly states in regards to her transformation:

“It’s not about the fanfare, it’s not about people cheering in the stadium, it’s not about going down the street and everybody giving you a that-a-boy-Bruce-pat-on-the-back. OK? This is about your life.”

Not only does Jenner explain here why she decided to fully go through with her difficult, yet obviously rewarding, transformation, but also she shares why she chose Vanity Fair as the publication through which she’d introduce her true self. Unlike other magazines that have highlighted his daughters' dyed hair, plastic surgeries, mishaps, or reality show drama, Vanity Fair recognizes when a story is important and deserves to be treated carefully and sensitively.

“Bruce always had to tell a lie,” she explains to VF. “He was always living that lie. Every day, he always had a secret, from morning until night. Caitlyn doesn’t have any secrets.” Caitlyn Jenner is finally telling the world her truth.

This story is not about the Kardashian’s picking up another season of their reality show. This story is not about Kendall and Kylie’s latest fashion do or don’t. There is no catchy Kanye soundtrack to Jenner’s photo shoot. Vanity Fair is telling the unique, inspiring story of Caitlyn Jenner — a woman striving to live as her true self. We are born with a body, but we are also born with a soul. Caitlyn Jenner is standing up for those whose souls do not match the genders they were assigned at birth. We have one life, and everyone deserves to live it as wholly ourselves.

I could not have chosen a better publication that would have told this story with the same level of grace and sophistication that Vanity Fair has. It would be my honor to call you Caitlyn, Ms. Jenner, and thank you so much for sharing your story with us. It is a pleasure to meet you.
