This 'OITNB' Margarita Will Make Your Weekend

by Arielle Dachille

As sure as Piper Chapman enjoys her artisanal soaps, any self-respecting television maven loves show-themed food and drink pairings. Since all thirteen episodes of Orange Is The New Black Season 3 have premiered on Netflix, there's no time like the present to figure out what to imbibe for your weekend-long marathon. But fret not! Thanks to the handiwork of our own Jenna Wexler, Bustle has concocted the perfect cocktail to go with your Netflix binge ... behold, the Margarita de Litchfield! You're welcome.

Now, it's not to say that Red, Alex, Taystee and the rest of our friends are drinking frosty cocktails in prison. (Even if the commissary offers plenty of makeshift makeup substitute, they sadly don't stock tequila nips.) But given that it's summertime, we're constantly craving margaritas. There's no better way to combine your favorite seasonal adult beverage with your favorite show than to honor it with an appropriately-named drink. We've incorporated the show's titular colors by making an orange margarita accessorized with a black salt rim. The end result is basically as festive as the Litchfield Correctional Facility Christmas pageant.

Now that I've effectively whetted your appetite for booze, let's walk through the steps to make our Margarita De Litchfield, a drink best enjoyed when spending some quality time with your favorite fictional inmates. Drink up, dandelion.

What You'll Need:

  • 2 cups orange or tangerine juice (the fresher the better)
  • 1/2 cup fresh squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 cup Triple Sec (Grand Marnier or Cointreau work well)
  • 1 1/4 cup tequila
  • 4 teaspoons agave
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons black salt of choice (we used smoked black salt, but there are several varieties)
  • ice
  • fresh orange and lime slices for garnish

This recipe makes enough for about six servings.

1. Mix In A Pitcher

Mix your orange juice, tequila, Triple Sec, agave, and lime juice in a serving pitcher.

2. Prep Your Glasses

First, grind a tablespoon or two of your salt onto a small plate. Then, using a lime wedge, wet the rim of your glass. Not so much that it's dripping, but enough to evenly coat the lip.

Place your glass face down on the plate of salt, and lightly twist to coat.

Roll the rim side to side to get a little extra salt action.

3. Fill Your Glass With Ice, Pour, Garnish, and Serve!

Now enjoy your OITNB-worthy cocktail in the freedom of your own home. Orange jumpsuit optional.
