Ben Affleck Breaks Silence After Divorce News
It's been six days, five hours, and 22 minutes since Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced they were getting a divorce after 10 years of marriage. (I'm kidding. Maybe.) Since that horrible day, which rocked many people's faith that a celeb couple could live happily ever after when faced with one temptation after another and ridiculous perks the likes of which no other human has ever seen, I've been waiting to hear either Affleck or Garner speak out about their split. I was half expecting one of them to emerge from a balcony in Argentina and address heartbroken followers about what, exactly, went wrong and how they're planning to fix it. It would have been nice to hear them dish advice on how others can maintain a strong union by letting us know what happened with their relationship. It's the least they can do after inflicting this pain on everyone.
Affleck has broken his silence. But don't expect the 42-year-old actor and humanitarian to serve as a source of comfort. For me. Or you, probably. Affleck is the founder of the Eastern Congo Initiative and, as such, has wisely used his soapbox to help draw attention to the important work he and others are doing to improve the lives of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has been plagued by disease, sexual violence, and poverty since war broke out in the African country in the early '90s and has since claimed the lives of 5.4 million people.
Affleck's first public words after news of his divorce shocked the world serve as a reminder that there are far, far greater problems out there than relationship woes between two famous people and loving parents who are committed to co-parenting their children.
The Batman vs. Superman star's tweet also gives us insight into how he may choose to work through this painful time in his life — by throwing himself into his humanitarian work. Rather than sit around and wallow in pity, a great thing for Affleck to do is work to improve the lives of others. Focusing on career and passions doesn't mean he's automatically choosing to neglect dealing with Garner, their three children, and the doom and gloom of their impending divorce.
Speaking of Garner, after the divorce announcement, she and Affleck flew down with their kids to their private Bahamas getaway in order to, I'm guessing, shield Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3, from paparazzi. Now that they're back, guess where 43-year-old Garner was spotted? On the Atlanta set of her upcoming film, Miracles From Heaven. Back in March, Garner revealed she felt it was her "turn" to work after supporting Affleck in his career all of these years. She told Us Weekly,
I've been home for a long time. It's my turn and I'm going to go to work this spring. I think I’ll work the spring and summer, maybe the fall too, as long as some of it's at home. I don't think my deals are done yet so I can't say, but yeah, I'm about to go to work.
You never know — Garner and Affleck's divorce could be the best thing to ever happen to the couple and their careers. Given their love and devotion for their children, I'm betting they'll make sure life is as normal and happy for them as possible.
