Disney's Making A Live Action 'Sword In The Stone'

by Rachel Semigran

Live action remakes are the new black over at Disney. The animation monolith has Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Jungle Book, and an untitled Prince Charming project all in the works to get live action makeovers and now they're adding another classic to the roster with The Sword in the Stone . The 1963 animated feature is about a young King Arthur and his magical mentor Merlin. To bring the mystical tale to life, Disney has hired Game of Thrones writer and producer Brian Cogman to write the script. Needless to say, The Sword in the Stone is going to be the darkest of the Disney live action remakes.

This updated Sword in the Stone certainly won't be as light-hearted as its animated predecessor, and that's a good thing. Young fans who grew up with the Harry Potter series can certainly stomach a bit of dark arts and sword play, so why can't Disney kids? By tapping into the brains behind Game of Thrones, Disney is also merging two huge fanbases into what will perhaps be its most successful endeavor into live filmmaking yet — which is perhaps the biggest reason why this film absolutely should be re-written with a female hero.

When we think of women and Disney we think of princesses — often those who need rescuing by some handsome prince. Though we have Brave and Frozen to counteract that, it's still not quite enough to re-write it. I can only imagine the power of a young Queen written by the same mind who writes characters like Arya Stark and Daenerys Targaryen. It would be a total game-changer for Disney.

It could also help create a shift in the way Game of Thrones writes its women. If writing for a young female hero within the world of Disney maybe JUST MAYBE Game of Thrones could do a little less raping and setting fire to its women. A gal can dream, eh?

Were The Sword in the Stone to have a female star, here are some actresses who would totally slay the part:
