8 Things That Happen When You're In A Reading Rut

by Amy Sachs

Reading ruts come out of nowhere, and can happen for all kinds of reasons. Maybe you just finished the best book ever, and have a major book hangover. Maybe your favorite series just ended, or perhaps you just can't find the right book for you. No matter what, suddenly, you can't find a single book that seems at all appealing. You realize it's happening: You're falling into a reading rut. Don't worry, though, because we've all been there, and we can get through this together.

As someone who spends the majority of her free time reading, I know the struggle that is the reading rut. You want to read. You try to read, but... you can't. No books grab your interest, or you start something only to put it down and never look at it again. It's a hard time. You're just about ready to give up. Well, that, or visit the bookstore enough times that something sticks.

The next time you find yourself unable to get lost in the best way possible, it's likely that you'll experience these 8 things:

Serious Indifference

Wait, what? You always have a pile of books you can't wait to read. The next one is constantly ready to go. Suddenly, nothing sounds good. What's happening? Maybe you're sick? Your books are still there, waiting for you, and you can't bring yourself to pick up any one of them.

Frantic Reading

Frantic reading. Yes, this is a thing. You know nothing sounds good right now, but you try book after book anyway, hoping something will stick. The first couple of pages don't draw you in? Next! This kind of thing just isn't like you: you're starting books and you can't finish anything. They lay sadly, a few pages read, with no hope of being finishing. Maybe the next one will get you out of your rut!

Deep Sadness

Books are your friends! Sometimes you like them more than real people. What are you supposed to do until this passes? Socialize? HA.

Forcing Yourself To Read... and Failing

If you can't read, you're not just bored, but you're also lacking inspiration. That's almost worse. This thing is spiraling out of control, and you're going to take charge. If you sit down with a book, you'll make yourself read it, you're sure of it!

Having a Weekend-Long Netflix Binge

If the books won't have you, don't worry: Netflix will always be there to welcome you home. Maybe now you can catch up on those shows everyone tells you to watch. Plus, these are stories, too, so that counts!

Asking Everyone You Know For Recommendations

Your fellow book-loving friends wouldn't steer you wrong. They never have before! Plus, this next recommendation could be just the thing to get you back into your reading ways!

Finding That Magical Book

The one that finally, finally, draws you in and gets you back into reading. You thought your reading rut would never end but some characters are so magical, you can't help but fall in love with them.

Finally Going Back to Business As Usual

And hoping this doesn't happen again. Like, ever.
