Tory Burch's Athletic Line Will Debut Next Month

by Marc Cuenco

If Tory Burch can turn a pair of ballerina flats into a chic wardrobe staple, just imagine what she can do with a tennis skirt or yoga pants. Well, you won't have to wait long because Burch is launching a new athletic line called Tory Sport next month. The collection includes workout clothes that are versatile and fashionable enough to wear outside the gym. The designer told Vogue about the inspiration behind Tory Sport.

"I started to think, How do we make this stuff chic again?" Burch said. "What a lot of sports brands miss is femininity, unless it’s a garish femininity in the form of exposed body parts and neon colors. I was thinking more The Royal Tenenbaums.” Much like her mod-meets-bohemian approach to her namesake brand, Burch designed a fitness collection inspired by a different era — athletic wear from the '70s play a huge role in the Tory Sport concept — with a modern twist.

Even with a multibillion dollar fashion, beauty, and lifestyle empire, the designer and tennis buff began expanding her brand to include fitness two years ago. Last summer, Burch partnered up with Fitbit for a line of stylish fitness trackers.

"Although I’m a shy person, I think I’ve always been attracted to risk," Burch said. "If I’m not taking chances, if I’m not a little bit out of my comfort zone, I get bored.” Tory Sport will debut in September during New York Fashion Week. The flagship Manhattan location will serve as a pop-up store for the new line, but a permanent Tory Sport branch will open later this year.

Judging from Burch's Instagram, she's already a pro at fitness and activewear. Here are three reasons to get you excited about Tory Sport:
