13 Disney Movies That Need Live-Action Remakes

by Kayleigh Hughes
Disney

I think we can all officially agree that the recent live-action remake of The Beauty and The Beast, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, was an absolute wild success, at least as far as the box office is concerned. Disney nostalgia fever is in full-swing, and the folks who were once children pressing rewind on their Disney VHS tapes over and over again are now grown adults, eager either to relive the magic on their own or to share it with their own children. And that means that, aside from The Beauty and the Beast, there are tons of other Disney movies that need live-action remakes.

I'm talking total classics as well as newer, quirkier Disney movies. Some of them (Cinderella, Snow White, Peter Pan), have gotten what feels like a dozen live-action remakes apiece. But others, full of awesome character moments, creative plots, and gorgeous set design opportunities, are sitting in the wings, just waiting to see what Hollywood director might take them on. Fortunately, the good news is that live-action versions of tons of your favorite animated Disney movies are already in the works. Many of them are below, as well as some of my personal favorites that, to my knowledge, haven't been picked up for live-action — yet.

1

'Lilo & Stitch'

This live-action movie, if done correctly, could be the best movie ever made. This would be epic and beautiful. Please make it happen.

2

'Hercules'

How amazing would a gaudy, shiny, colorful, live-action Hercules remake be, with just as much jokey fun and self-awareness as the cartoon? There aren't enough playful movies set in Ancient Greece, in my opinion.

3

'The Little Mermaid'

If you ever watched Australian series H20: Just Add Water, you know just how delightful a live-action mermaid story can be. It's time to make The Little Mermaid happen, and thankfully, a remake is in the works.

4

'Treasure Planet'

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Imagine the visual wonders of a live-action Treasure Planet. And the ensemble casting you could do, I mean.

5

'The Princess & The Frog'

The movie definitely needs a live-action remake, and it would be awesome and the set designs would be gorgeous.

6

'Mulan'

I mean, duh. This feminist and badass Disney movie deserves, and is in fact getting, a live-action remake. It's in pre-production and is set to be released in 2018.

7

'The Emperor's New Groove'

I had forgotten that this was even a Disney movie. It's so offbeat and weird and funny. I can imagine a live-action version being almost Zoolander-esque. Make it happen, please.

8

'Winnie The Pooh'

Honestly, I'm kind of trying to figure out how this would work on a live-action level, but I trust they'll figure it out. This lovable, underrated Disney story is set to see a live-action remake where Christopher Robin is an adult, and I am here for it.

9

'One Hundred And One Dalmatians'

They've made a live-action movie of this before, but that doesn't mean that we don't need a new one, especially if Emma Stone is going to play Cruella de Ville. I have to see that.

10

'Lion King'

I imagine this would be sort of like the new Jungle Book remake, which was delightful. Even more delightful? This is actually happening, and Donald Glover is playing Simba. Yes, please.

11

'Fantasia'

So this one seems like a reach, but I'm imagining it being a more adult-friendly, surreal sort of adventure. And in fact, it might not be much of a reach at all, because according to Insider, it seems Disney is working on a Maleficent-esque film about the Chernabog demon from Fantasia. I admit I'm curious.

'The Sword And The Stone'

For this one, I'm picturing a much darker, more intense live-action remake, which seems to fit the bill for what the real filmmakers have in mind. Or, at least I assume so, given that it's reportedly going to be written by Game of Thrones writer/producer Bryan Cogman.
