Katy Perry & Pharrell Aren't BFFs — Yet
Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams are pop royalty. It's difficult to think of anyone who rivals their chart-topping status, as both have produced some of the catchiest, most popular tracks of the past decade. As a nod to their indelible celeb status, the two stars are co-chairs of the 2017 Met Gala. They will closely with Vogue's Anna Wintour to help with the evening, but are Perry and Pharrell friends outside of the workplace? The two stars have been seen socializing at fashion events in the past, which might suggest they're friendly even when they aren't planning the year's biggest gala.
In early April, Pharrell hosted a Chanel bag launch in Santa Monica, California, and Perry was also in attendance. A handful of other high-profile stars came out to celebrate the new Gabrielle bag, and many told reporters on the red carpet about their respect for Pharrell's role as a musical and fashion influencer, Variety reports. While Perry isn't quoted specifically, she posed for pics with the singer and producer. According to Variety, she also joined the star and his wife, Helen Lasichanh, on the patio at the event for some of the evening. There would have been plenty for the stars to discuss at this time, as their first run chairing the Met Gala would be a few weeks away.
Perry and Pharrell are both known for their musical talents, but over the years, they have become iconic in the fashion world, as well. Both stars like to experiment with their style, whether it's rainbow hair or wearing shorts to the Oscars. They're a good fit for hosting this year's Met Gala, as the theme is Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between. Designer Kawakubo is known for testing the limits of fashion, and is also an honorary chairwomen for the night with Caroline Kennedy. Other hosts include Anna Wintour, of course, and Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen.
As titans of the pop industry, Pharrell and Perry are likely familiar from years of award shows. However, their Met Gala duties have thrown the two together more than ever. On Sunday, the hosts attended a pre-Met Gala party at Wintour's home. According to People, the exclusive dinner was only for a small group, and the stars were seen wearing attire more simple than the gowns and suits they'll don for Monday night's festivities.
As both Perry and Pharrell love to go against fashion norms, fans are no doubt eager to see what outfits they will wear on Monday. However, their hosting duties for the evening are little less clear, as the actual proceedings of the Met Gala once the designers and celebs are inside remain shrouded in mystery.
While the Met Gala honors style, Pharrell and Perry are first and foremost musicians. While it doesn't seem like they're BFFs yet, perhaps their next collaboration will take place outside the red carpet, and there will be a future making tunes together.
